Movie Reviews of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Impressionistic Storytelling with Crystal Clear Characterization Summary: 5 Stars
Shane Black's directorial debut is the sort of film that one can enjoy immensely as long as one is willing to go along for the ride. That ride has to take place somewhere; in this case it takes place in Los Angeles. The first frames to show Downey's character Harry Lockhart come from the shallow end of a swimming pool, so we the audience see Harry the same way everyone else at that Christmas party sees him. Considering just how shallow the image-driven culture of Los Angeles appears to the rest of the civilized world, I can understand and appreciate that skewed angle underwater. In his youth, Harry was a magician, but now he's just a petty thief. Both vocations require someone who's good with his hands, and Harry is. What Harry's not so good at is figuring out this whole L.A. thing. I mean, life must have been so much simpler back in the Big Apple where he was discovered by a big time movie producer, albeit quite by accident. What Harry needs more than anything is someone who can steer him straight on L.A.'s curvy roads.
That's where Val Kilmer as Gay Perry comes in; Harry is being considered for a part as a private detective and who better to train him than a licensed private detective? Oh, and Gay Perry is gay, but his homosexuality is quite incidental to his character. As a matter of fact, Perry is clearly the more manly of the two.
Harmony captures Harry's locked heart. Actually, she captured it all the way back in high school without ever quite realizing it. She came out to L.A. from southern Indiana in order to save her sister from her father. Her sister came all the way out to L.A. to find who she mistakenly thinks is her real father. If it all becomes confusing, just take heart in the fact that NONE of these characters understand what is going on any better than we do.
What Kiss Kiss Bang Bang does best is that it allows the protagonist to befriend the audience, and it is for that admittedly subjective reason that I love this film. The plot elements are clear if you're willing to look hard enough, but what is more important is what the characters learn about themselves from experiencing that which they do not completely understand. The acting, scene pacing, and cinematography are all top notch, but a little more clarity in the storytelling itself wouldn't have hurt, but that is the ONLY complaint I have. All in all, this stands up to repeated viewings better than most!
If this sounds like your cup of tea, then I would whole-heartedly recommend getting the blu-ray disc. Not only is the cinematography top notch, but the color treatment of the 35mm film is absolutely one of the most beautiful treatments I've ever seen! The brightness of the reds against the softness of the blue hues in the bar scene where Harry is trying to win Harmony over are some of the most best images I've seen on a Blu-ray disc.
