Movie Reviews of King Solomon's MinesMovie Review: Awful Summary: 2 Stars
Rent/buy the original with Paul Robeson or the spectacular version with Stewart Granger. This is just plain awful, except for the amazing Jerry Goldsmith score, which you can buy separately. And I did see it in the movies, and tried to get my money back.
Movie Review: ALMOST AS EXCITING AS WATCHING PAINT DRY Summary: 1 Stars
A surprisingly bad version of the H. Rider Haggard novel about adventurers in Africa searching for the legendary lost diamond mines of King Solomon. To say that this film is a poor man's Raiders of the Lost Ark is not only a vast over-statement, it is an insult to Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford et al. who made that film. This version is a shocking waste of film and talent. The screenplay is incredibly bad and the acting is even worse. While Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone are nice eye candy, they can't sustain the entire film on looks alone. They, along with Herbert Lom, overact badly. The only saving grace of this film is the always fun John Rhys-Davies and the music of Jerry Goldsmith. While the 1950 version had the beautiful location backgrounds of Africa, this film wastes locations done in Zimbabwe making them look like they were filmed in the hills of California. If you want to see a truly great version of King Solomon's Mines, see the 1937 version which has fine acting, is pretty faithful to the novel and, after more than 70 years, still holds up. If you want to see a version with 1950's eye candy, beautiful scenery and a decent story, see the 1950 version with Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr. See this version only if you have insomnia and need something to put you to sleep.
