Movie Reviews of King Solomon's Mines

Movie Review: Sexy girl - compromising positions - lame execution
Summary: 3 Stars

This poor attempt at movie making takes the title of an excellent book by H. Rider Haggard. Add lots of sex and action at the expense of the story and characters. Richard Chamberlain gets to practice his judo positions. Sharon Stone practices other positions before she became famous. On the plus side they did re-introduce Gagoola; she was conspicuously missing form the 1950 Deborah Kerr version. Yet if they did not make this so campy it would have been laughed off the screen.

Jesse Huston (Sharon Stone) convinces Great White Hunter Allan Quatermain (Richard Chamberlain) to free her father from the clutches of a dastardly pare of bad guys. All they want is her father's map to King Solomon's Mines. Jesse and Allan go through many trials and tribulations in the process.

I will not mention the different trials as part of the fun is the shock value of surprise. However I will say that this may be worth watching so tat you will appreciate the fine production of the 1950 Deborah Kerr version, and better still the original book.

Movie Review: Rather entertaining in the right state of mind
Summary: 3 Stars

The makers of King Solomon's Mines know it's an Indiana Jones rip-off and they take no shame or attempt to hide it. With that said I actually found King Solomon's Mines to be rather enjoyable. Sure it's cheesy and cornball, but some of the humor is hilarious. I found myself laughing outloud at many occasions. The film also has almost nonstop action. It just jumps from one action scene to another. Richard Champerlain gives a great tongue-in-cheek performance as adventurer Allan Quartermain. Sharon Stone is rather bad in her supporting role, but she's nice to look at. The first half of the film is actually for more enjoyable than the last half because some of teh situations get a little too outragions (I mean a giant spider...come on!) As long as yor not expecting Raiders of the Lost Arc and your open to take a trip with a really off-the-wall adventure, you might enjoy some aspects of King Solomon's Mines. Just make sure to steer clear of its sequel.

Afraid I was not very pleased with DVD packaging the plastic box to the DVD was all stuck up with Security tags which has left it all sticky hence I have to find another box and The DVD picture cover itself was stuck with selotape which took some of the picture off.
I like my DVD's to be in mint condition if I buy brand new ones. I should have sent it back but did not want the hassle of posting back.
The supplier needs to be aware of these points.

Movie Review: Es un churro
Summary: 3 Stars

Esta pelicula la vi en el cine y me acuerdo que me habia gustado mucho, pero a hora que la veo despues de 20 años la neta es un churro, me cae que no hay como las de Indiana Jones, y eso que son de la misma epoca.

Movie Review: If only the film had been as good as the music!
Summary: 2 Stars

I can appreciate a good B-Movie, but this film is more like a D-Movie! I agree with another reviewer that the great Jerry Goldsmith score is actually too good for this film. Herbert Lom is terribly miscast as one of the central villains, and the script seems to have been written by someone who forgot to take their medication.

This film certainly had potential, considering some of the talent at the studio's disposal. But in the end, a horrible script and lackluster direction sinks the entire project. Cannon Films knew they had the makings of something good and tried again by releasing a sequel "Allan Quartermain and the lost city of gold". The sequel is the better film, but not by much.

I would recommend this film to those who derive enjoyment from lower-grade B-Movies. Get ready for some really BAD special effects and absolutely ridiculous stunt work. It took me over twenty years to want to watch this film again, and it'll probably take me another twenty to forget once again how bad it really is. Trust me, watching this film twice in a lifetime is plenty!

SPOILER ALERT

One of the most ridiculous airplane battle scenes you will EVER see. Totally ridiculous stunt sequence on a train! You gotta love that really big stew pot sequence! Ooooh, GIANT SPIDER!

Oh the pain!
