Movie Reviews of King KongMovie Review: Not quite the disaster people remember Summary: 3 Stars
King Kong in its 1976 incarnation isn't the turkey everyone seems to remember - or at least not when Jessica Lange is offscreen, which sadly isn't nearly often enough. It's a wonder her career ever survived her abysmal Marilyn-without-the-intellect impersonation, all exaggerated breathy mannerisms and inane dialog ("Did you ever meet anyone whose life was saved by Deep Throat?" - relax, she means the movie). Parts of it are surprisingly well directed and the updating to an oil exploration voyage effective enough, although the studio scenes are often all-too obvious and the special effects variable at best. Unfortunately, it packs considerably less into its 132 minutes than the original did in its 99, and wastes too much time on Lange instead of the big guy. Curiously, in its efforts to make Kong more sympathetic (no native villages destroyed here, with Jeff Bridges' palaeontologist, almost as hairy as Rick Baker's Kong himself, constantly on hand to protect his reputation and attempt to stop him taking the big drop) it just ends up diminishing him. Watchable enough, but it was never going to be too hard for Peter Jackson to top this.
Movie Review: how about releasing the complete version? Summary: 3 Stars
king kong (1976). though not the greatest kong film, still, had some neat things. only, some of the best stuff, especially, destruction scenes in new york, were reedited back into the film, for an early 1980s television release and you won't see this on the dvd that presently is on the market. at almost 3 hours, this rare version kicked ass! the film was that much better with these sequences put back in. if for lack of words, more exciting! too bad, this version was only shown once! and, to make matters worse, will probably never be released on dvd. thank goodness i taped it off television when i did. now, if all the kong fans would write to universal and tell them to release this version, then, we'd be getting somewhere. i'm telling you, this film is 10 times better with the additional footage back in! rick baker really shined in this version as well as the actors. so, cross your fingers that universal comes to their senses and makes this available. we can only hope!!!
Movie Review: Kong the least Summary: 3 Stars
There have been at least four film versions of King Kong - the 1933 Fay Wray original, a 1962 version filmed in India (which I haven't seen), Peter Jackson's 2005 stunner with Naomi Watts, and this turkey. Not having seen the Indian version, I can only say that this is by far the worst of the three U.S. versions. It appears that the writers used the criterion "Hey - it's *fiction*!" to justify just about anything, and somewhere in between "...a NASA spy satellite went way off course and photographed it by mistake" and the realization that this "oil survey ship" has no visible drilling equipment although drilling to 28,000 ft is discussed, I realised that we were completely off in fantasyland and the writers had abandoned any pretense of reality - Hey! it's **Fiction** - **nothing** has to make sense .... and it doesn't. Come to think of it Dino De Laurentiis also brought us "Barbarella", so maybe there's an artistic precedent.
Movie Review: Classic KONG remake, but mediocre DVD package! Summary: 3 Stars
This review is NOT about the movie. I loved it when I first saw it at the age of 9 in 1976, and I still love it now.
If you ever saw this movie when it was broadcasted on NBC-TV in the late '70's and early '80's, then you know there was a lot of extra footage added to extend the movie over two nights of television. Some of it was useless filler, some of it really helped to enhance the movie. With every other movie studio releasing "special editions" with extra and deleted footage, why does Paramount continue to short-change fans of this version of KING KONG???
The DVD is well worth the purchase if you're simply looking to own this movie with all of it's high quality picture and sound. It's just too bad we can't have more.
Movie Review: Why did they did this thing? Summary: 3 Stars
Oh please,King Kong is a guy in a gorilla suit.Dino de Laurentis was brave to actually do this. The gorilla suit might have only cost 5$ at the costume store.Thought the movie has the beutifull Jessica Lange in his debut and Jeff Bridges.
It was good but could have been alot better.***3 stars out of 5
