Movie Reviews of King KongMovie Review: I loved this film and I still do! Summary: 5 Stars
This film was made in relation to the 1970's. You can't really compare this film to the 33' version. The 33' version was an outdated stop and go animation feature with lots of overacting and underacting! I thought Rick Baker upgraded what Willis O'Brian and Toho studios did with the original Kong and Godzilla. He made his ape more realistc looking with his expressions and body language. He did this with a gorilla suit. That in itself was impressive! Mind you computerization was not yet discovered. Baker did good with what technology had to offer in 1976. Baker also went on to make the effects for "An Amercian Werewolf In London". I liked Bridges, Lange, and Grodin. Jessica Lange was and still is a gorgeous woman. The scene were Kong was fingering Lange's top was sexy! She only played a 70's valley girl, not the deep characters like she did in the near future. Jeff Bridges looked and portrayed the young "Dude" from "The Big Labowski". He rebelled against the corporate structure (Petro). Grodin's character was of course loud, narrow minded, and too ambitious like his counterpart in the 33 version. It was beatiful seeing him getting stomped! The ending was very very sad seeing Kong die in detail and WTC as well. The psuedo sophisticates may laugh at this but this film I think will achieve cult status because of WTC. The computer cookie cutter which came out last year is only a retread of the original version. The 76' version was fresh and innovative for its time and in sense still is. P.S. Does anyone remember the viewmaster, the board game, and the collector cards for this film? P.S. Look for a young John Lone (The Last Emperor) as the cook on the ship.
Movie Review: A Classic In It's Own Right... Summary: 5 Stars
I have watched all three versions of King Kong and though the first version is and always will be a classic, my favorite of all is this version with Jeff Bridges, Charles Groudin and introducing Jessica Lange in what I think is a wonderful portral of a dizzy blond aspiring actress. I know she got a lot of flack for her portral but she is, "Acting" after all which is what she is supposed to be doing, correct? This movie for me was one of the hightlights of a year when I'd moved to a new state and at the age of 16 was a real downer, but seeing this with my parents is one of my fondest memories. I loved Kong and his many expressions which was another selling point for me. I especially love the waterfall scene where he is cleaning up Jessica Langes character. I thought it a little eroctic even for a Kong movie but it was the first time you acutlaly get to see Kong smile...LOL..go figure!!! The other eye catcher for me was the location of the shoot, the Hawaiian scenery in this picture only endeared me to wanting to some day visit one of the most beautiful places on God's earth. All in all, I would recommend this movie for all these reasons and just for the plan fact that it is a fun watch from my past. Check it out, you won't regret it.
Movie Review: Jack Black Sucks Summary: 5 Stars
It is silly to compare this version of King Kong with the original. They are each representative of the times in which they were made. This is a good movie in and of itself. Now, the new Jack Black King Kong, on the other hand, is a piece of crap. You can compare it to either the 1933 version or the 1976: it sucks no matter what. The funny thing is, those people who think that the Jack Black/Peter Jackson version is somehow more in keeping with the spirit of the original are dead wrong. Just consider the attitude of Kong's abductee in the 1933 version: he is a monster. Fay Wray just wanted to get the hell away from him. If Kong was killed, that was fine with her. But in both the 1976 and 2005 versions, both Jessica Lange and whoever that other woman is want him saved. They cry when he dies.
All that to say that the 1976 version is not what you think it is. I enjoyed it immensely. I've seen it probably nine times and I still like it. By the way, I've seen the original about twelve times and Peter Jackson's stinker once.
Movie Review: DVD of the year! Summary: 5 Stars
After nearly a year of hype, the most talked about dvd of 2005 is finally here, and I'm thrilled to report that Paramount has done a remarkable job in bringing KING KONG to the digital medium! One of the best discs the studio has ever produced, the care and attention lavished on this classic library title reinforces just how much the company is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of a wide variety of films. As far as extras, it must have been tempting for the good people at Paramount to provide fans with every last tidbit of production and promotional material related to this project, but the studio wisely avoided the "puff" pieces and instead put together a solid package of the most interesting and historically relevant information pertaining to the film; the supplementary material included herein is nothing short of magnificent! It's releases like this one that have established Paramount's vaunted position in the dvd community, and builds anticipation for the many fine discs to come.
Movie Review: Call me silly - but -------- this Kong is great! Summary: 5 Stars
I must disagree with the editorial review, as well as with most of the others. This version of King Kong was terrific. It tugs at the heartstrings - the expression of Kong's eyes, the close-ups of his sadness (and on a wide-screen tv, makes it all the more heart-rendering). I truly loved this version - and, I might say,the theme was beautiful and adds to the sadness of the ending. So what? - Sure, you can tell it's a man in a monkey suit some of the time. But at others, especially the close ups of the giant beast, I was amazed at the realism portrayed in his face, the teeth, the sad eyes. The wide-screen transfer in this version, colors, etc., are great here - at least for a 1976 movie. The thump, thump, ..thump.....thump of Kong's heart at the end had me in tears. Yes, call me silly - I LOVED this King Kong!
