Movie Reviews of King Kong [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: Beating points to death
Summary: 2 Stars

At 3 hours plus, you go in wondering just what it is that is going to take up that much time. In the end, it's Naomi Watts's face. It's a pretty face, but there are entire scenes dedicated to her making soulful eyes at Kong, and getting the same in return. It's overdone to the point of near creepiness. They hammered at it until you start to wonder if the heroine has, well, certain issues.

There are high points. The "traffic pileup" of dinosaurs has to be seen to be believed, and the scene with Kong on ice managed to be genuinely touching and funny. Somewhere in here was a great one and a half hour movie. It just got lost under a vast, idealized, slightly creepy woman/ape relationship.

One warning for adults - the movie is clearly being pitched to kids, and uncritical kids at that. Crank suspension of disbelief to the maximum setting. An example: when they capture Kong, you are naturally wondering how they are going to manage to get Kong on a ship, and then have the ship survive with an angry Kong inside it for days of voyage. You're anticipating dramatic scenes. Forget it: the movie answers this by just skipping the whole question; the next scene is in New York. In the frantic rush to make Social Commentary (and/or get to the next soulful expression), some wonderful opportunities for genuine storytelling got brushed aside.

If you have kids who like their monsters big and strong, and occasionally repulsive; or someone who gets teary-eyed over what happens to monkeys in China (they get eaten), you might get something out of this. I was just looking for action and adventure, and it had some, but it got, well, Jackson'd to death. The man needs someone to tell him to lay off the melodrama and get to the point.

Movie Review: third Favorite Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

So i got this movie yesterday and this is my favorite movie next to Star wars episode III and Lord of the ring's Return of the King. My favorite scene's are V-rex battle and Insect pit. My favorite Caracter is Kong this is my favorite monster film. But I wish Kong had won the battle with the fighter jet's and returned to skull island.

Movie Review: A movie in desperate need of an editor
Summary: 1 Stars

My focus in on storytelling and I dislike films that let CGI and special effects overwhelm the basic story narrative. A ruthless editor might have been able to make this a fair movie, but it's awful as it stands. (One example: if the dinosaur stampede had been cut to one third the length, it might have worked.)

Jack Black is miscast, and his constant mugging and flippant delivery ruins a supposed tense drama. The rest of the cast does yeoman work and was probably embarrassed to be part of this fiasco.

Scenes drone on until you start to root for the CGI creatures to kill the entire cast so you can watch something entertaining. Except, this isn't possible. In an unintentional homage to B Westerns where a six-shooter never runs out of bullets, the rusty freighter disgorges endless supplies of sailors to be killed by yet another gaggle of CGI steroid monsters.

Try the original King Kong (Single-Disc Edition). The technology may not impress, but these people knew how to engage an audience in a story.
