Movie Reviews of Kind Hearts and Coronets

Movie Review: Thanks to Alec Guinness, a movie 9 times better than most
Summary: 5 Stars

Another brilliant comedy out of the Ealing studios in England. Oscar Wilde would be proud of the terrific dialogue in this one.

A young man (played by Dennis Price), 10th in line to inherit a dukedom, decides to take matters in his own hands and speed up the inheritance process by bumping off the other nine. Alec Guinness plays all 9 of the victims, and he's a marvel to watch. The comedy is black and droll. The wrongful arrest of Price at the end is a gem. The movie lacks the spriteliness of some of the other Ealing comedies, but it's so well done, so sophisticated, it's a pure treat. Definitely worth a watch.

Movie Review: One of my favorite films ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Few films have ever tried to make the viewer like a serial killer.

This is not the sort of film that makes you fall out of your chair laughing, it is a dark comedy that is full of wit and sophistication.

This movie had a British ending and an American ending to get past our censors. If you have only seen the American ending on TV you will notice that the British one on the DVD is subtly different. I do remember on TV hearing the racist jingle but this was removed from the DVD. When I was a lad people had more of a problem with the immoral ending than the N-word while today the opposite is true.

Movie Review: Kind hearts and coronets
Summary: 5 Stars

Black humour in this cynical comedy about the vengeance of a big store's salesman over an aristocratic family. Alec Guiness plays the eight members of the D'Ayscogn family, killed one by one by our gentle murder, in this biting macabre satire about good manners and serial killers directed with good pulse and scathing irony by Robert Hamer for Ealing Studios. A delightful dark satire from the golden age of british comedy with an unforgettable and ironic twist at its ending. Excellent print for this DVD edition.

Movie Review: Quaint, English and witty.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is British black comedy at its absolute best . It is set in an England that is sadly diminished, where the troubles in life were restricted to the perimeter of your village.
Alec Guinness is masterful at playing 10 different members of the same family, male and female.
Dennis price is the calm, respectable rogue that you will come to feel, is entirely justified in his murderous deeds. There are no acts of violence at all in the film which has a thought provoking twist at the end.

Movie Review: A Must See Film!
Summary: 5 Stars

DVD - Starz/Anchor Entertainment - Crisp video and audio. Just thinking about this film still makes me chuckle and shake my head. I first saw "Kind Hearts and Coronets" several years ago on TCM. My jaw dropped! Wonderful performances, a story-line to die for, solid entertainment! As for special features we've the Alec Guiness bio - in forward flip the pages and read style - but it was interesting. Wonderful film!
