Movie Review: Childhood Memories and Other Nostalgia
Summary: 5 Stars
If you grew up in Hawaii in the 70s, then this (as well as its companion volumes) is nearly a must have item. Kikaida was a popular children's show back then, and I can recall many hours playing out battle scenes with my friends and cousins. The production values, costumes, and effects are, of course, dated. However, the themes of good versus evil, the exploration of sentience and artificial intelligence, and the tensions between duty and desire are enduring--keeping in mind that they're considered from the perspective of a children's television show. Nonetheless, beginning with Volume Seven the series adds some complexity with the introduction of surprisingly sympathetic "monsters" like King Crab Maroon and the robot pair of Black Spiny Anteater and his daughter. Volume Eight, the volume under review, marks the introduction of Hakaida, who becomes the nemesis of Kidaida in the series' final six episodes. Hakaida is arguably the most nuanced of the characters in the Kikaida universe as he experiences the most visible evidence of internal conflict.
