Movie Reviews of KhartoumMovie Review: Ranks With The BEST of Them Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the great spectacles, the likes of which you are not likely see again. No absurdly exaggerated computer graphics here. The thousands of extras ARE thousands of extras. The photography, costumes, script direction and uniform performances are all top drawer. I never much cared for Charlton Heston. To me he was a better educated John Wayne type. But I have to admit, he's at the top of his game here. Ralph Richardson is the big scene stealer and should have gotten an oscar nod for his performance. Olivier, as always, is a marvel to watch. There's never a dull moment with either drama or action. It's a pity it got so little reception in its initial release, but thank God for DVD. Otherwise this masterpiece might have been lost forever.
Movie Review: Historical Relevance Summary: 5 Stars
Apart from being a spectacular that was extremely well-made with excellent scenery and great actors that portrayed their characters convinceingly, the basic themes in the movie suggest that history does to some extent repeat itself. It had a religious fanatic that threatened the Middle East and required the intervention of a world power. One statement by PM Gladstone was "How could a group of desert tribesmen defeat a modern,well-equipped army?" Another statement was that the British had an obligation to protect Egypt(Today Iraq?). Gladstone's response was "You mean tne Suez Canal" A vital British interest.(Today read "OIL"?)
Movie Review: Excellent story; fine acting Summary: 5 Stars
The outstanding cast in this true story of China Gordon's demise in the Sudan at the hands of the presumed "Mahdi" in 1884, is only one of several factors that make this a great film. The story line is excellent, as it not only presents the desert conflict battle scenes extremely well, but it also visually describes the political and social intrigue involved in the British efforts to establish and maintain its colonial empire in that era. In a subtle and obviously unintentional manner, the film also presents some hints of contemporary conflicts and social issues. A truly fine film!
Movie Review: Khartoum Summary: 5 Stars
The visual effects are superb of the Nile River,Sudan & the Sudan Desert. At times you feel, that you are right there, among the actor's! The acting of Charlton Heston,Laurence Olivier & Ralph Richardson are un-equaled,along with their supporting cast,as well.
It makes you better understand the mentality & thinking of the Muslim's,which in many ways is accurate in our present day lives.
Worth the viewing and owning. Highly recommend. One of the best action-packed movies I've ever seen!!!
Movie Review: Khartoum Summary: 5 Stars
Charlton Heston plays the charmed, charismatic Gen. Charles Gordon and Sir Laurence Olivier is suitably menacing as the Mahdi in this thumping tale of the siege of Khartoum and the death of history's classiest fall guy. Great action sequences throughout: the assault on the city, the relief expedition, the attempt of the river steamers to run the Dervish gauntlet.
