Movie Review: Great - Great - Great

Sometimes you go a small club and catch lightning in a bottle. Not the big arena, but the intimate venues where the audience feeds off the music, and the music off the audience. I have seen this on a few occasions in my lifetime. I saw it with Neil Young doing a solo acoustic show in Washington DC right after Kent State. I saw it in Philadelphia with the Mark Almond band (remember the guys from Room to Move with John Mayall?) This seems to be one of those nights. This DVD is a bit of a surprise in a few ways. One is in Kate's personality. Some of her songs can lean to the serious, or even morose, but that is not her. The between songs chatter is wonderful. The second surprise is something that you can't say about many performers. All of these songs are better live than the studio versions. Some of the recorded versions are a little flat but not on this night. The band is amazing and brings new life to the songs. Songs like Sir Eglamore and I Courted a Sailor are so superior to the originals that it will be hard to go back to listen to the old versions. And I liked the originals! If Kate were to retire from the business this band could go on without vocals. I know that Kate and John do not play together anymore, but I am glad they were together for this night. He is tremendous. The extras are excellent, especially the recordings of the Jolly Ploughman and the Wild Goose. All in all this is a great picture of an artist at her best. It makes you wish you had been there, and that they had played for another hour or two. I have heard Kate compared to Sandy Denny, or Judy Collins back in the 60s, but she really is nothing like them. This genre of music is so incomparable to most of what you hear today that it seems both old and new at the same time. Play it for your kids, and they will be surprised to find out how cool you are.
