Movie Reviews of Kamelot: One Cold Winter's Night

Movie Review: I would have sold my kidney to be there that night...
Summary: 5 Stars

-This is by far the greatest live DVD I have seen, (besides the celtic woman one that came on pbs, that was cool too.) To anybody that thought that Roy Khan was an amazing vocallist, but was worried that he may not have been able to re-create that same sound live, be without fear. Noth only can he capture that same flawless tone- he IMPROVES it! But don't worry-there's enough evidence to proove that none of this DVD was dubed over in studio. No, what we have here is raw, natural talent. The energy that went into this show was simpily phenominal! I really can't spot any flaws on it, even after repeated listens... on the conterary, it just gets better. Khan's voice, combined with his comanding stage presents really brings the show to life, but he certanitly is not the only highlight.
Thomas youngblood really deserves a metal for his performance here. I never paid a whole lot of attention to his playing before this. I mean, I knew he was a good player, I just underestimated his genuine talent. If I could compere him to any other guitarist, mabey it would be Nightwish's Emppu Vourien, who's subtle touch compliments the music instead of overpowering it. His solos may not be that technicall, but it suits the music. Youngblood has a similer method, just a different syle/sound. he doesent seem to invoke as much tremelo/whammy usage, and does more pinch-harmonic stuff as dimonstrated on 'March of Mophisto.' He has never been one to take the center stage, but is always there to support Khan's charisma on the side of the stage.
-Keyboards are great aswell. It is a common fault of many powermetaller's to allow the keyboards to get way out of hand. This guy knows how much is too much, and really adds to the music without ruining it. My peronal favorite track with him would probably be 'The Center of the Universe.' superb.
-The bass player really impressed me hear aswell. Just the fact that he uses his fingers as opossed to a pick is amazing, but to do so while maintaining a steady tone with no noticable mistakes is even more amazing. He stood out on 'When the Lights are Down,' imitating the guitar work with several key changes.
The crowd seems to really be into it, and honestly, with a performance like that... who wouldn't be? I don't care if your a kamelot fan or not, If you were there, right below the stage, you'd be going crazy.
-Simone is there too of coarse, complimenting Khan's voice with her own on 'the Haunting.' I like the live version better than the music video! They go together like fire and ice. Oh, and let me just say, I've seen some impressive headbanging prior to this, but... dang. Just watch the vid and you'll understand what I mean. Shagrath on the other hand was absent. That's a shame. I wanted to see him do some creepy stuff on stage. They had a replacement of corse... and he was ok,just not as evil and... for lack of better words, just not Shagarth. Then again, I thought that they should have made his vocal contributions on march of mophisto louder, you know? I wanted to here him ROAR!!! Never the less, the sound was right on with the heart-pounding 'March of mophisto.'
-We also get to enjoy beatifull ballads such as 'Forsaken.' That one was powerfull. Khan has proven his abillities to the world, and really gave off alot of versatility. All and all, this single disc is well worth the cash.
The second disc is cool too. nothing essential, but pretty cool. I won't go into too much depth, as I would prefer not to spoil anything more than I allredy have. This DVD is highly recomended for fans of Kamelot, power metal, and everyone that shares an open mind with the capabillities of appriciating good music. Go buy it, and you won't be disapoited. I SPEAKETH THE TRUTH!
