Movie Reviews of K-19: The WidowmakerMovie Review: Much better than reviews would indicate Summary: 5 Stars
I was pleasantly surprised with this film. After all the reviews I had seen complaining about bad Russian accents, I finally decided to rent this one. To me, the accents weren't bad enough to affect my enjoyment of the movie. The fact is, the crew of this submarine were heroes, although their own government wouldn't acknowledge it. If they hadn't done everything they did, there's a good chance that this incident would have started a war when the sub's explosion destroyed the American destroyer. No one would have ever believed that it was an accident. No, the film isn't as good as "Das Boot". But that's okay. They're two different movies about two different situations. Comparing them is really pointless. If you don't want to buy this movie, fine. But it's definitely worth a rental!
Movie Review: Honor, Courage and Duty Summary: 5 Stars
This is a moving story of honor, courage and duty to one's homeland and to one's shipmates. It is moving, not uplifting. The price of duty, even though honorable and showing great courage is not always pretty as this film depicts. Harrison Ford gives one of his most realistic performances though not one of his most charismatic (which is loyal to his character). Liam Neeson's character must show all the human qualities that Ford's captain can not, because Ford is the captain and Neeson understands this point. Both actors are brilliant in this respect. Don't wait for this film to jump up and grab you. Just let it work on you. The images will stay with you. Try to watch some of the specials they are showing on TV about the actual event. It will make this film even more closer and moving.
Movie Review: Even average acting of Harrison Ford can't prevent me to give this movie 5 stars! Summary: 5 Stars
There are so much information about this movie in Amazon.com description and other reviews so I don't want to repeat them. The only problem in this movie was Harisson Ford's style, he was acting more American than Russian and for moments you may feel that K-19 is an American submarine and Harisson Ford is an American Captain. He was trying to act like an staborn phenomenon but despite of all of his efforts, he couldn't deny his American Friquent Style! I think Harrison Ford for this movie was not a wise Decision. I know, starring First class actor like him could guarantee the best selling of this movie and no one can blame the studio for trying to make more money but me myself really dissapointed of such flaw in this astonishing movie.
Movie Review: Very compelling film. Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw this movie I really didn't know what to think. Its portrayal of nuclear disaster aboard a ship is sometimes a little too real, and this movie is definitely one you do not watch for "enjoyment." That being said, I love this movie, and here's why.
1. It's a true story.
2. It is extremely patriotic--even if it's patriotism displayed by the "wrong" country. How can you not appreciate service men suffering and sacrificing for their country?
This was well-produced in my opinion, and I feel the only flaw was Harrison Ford playing a Russian. If you get upset very easily do not watch this film as parts are very disturbing, but I appreciate this film very much for the values it displays.
Movie Review: Specific reasons to like this film Summary: 5 Stars
There are seversl really good reviews of this film on Amazon so rather than a review here are reasons to buy the DVD.
1.K-19 is a great study of the reasons why Soviet technology bombed out when compared to American Cold War technology.
2.This movie is a character study in bravery, dedication, human emotion and sacrifice for the sake of one's companions. (Notice I did not say "comrads.")
3.It is a story of government cover-up to save face at the cost of human lives and careers.
4.As a submarine movie it compares nicely to Das Boot, Run Silent...,Enemy Below, etc.
5.It is a great companion to Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow's other war themed film.
