Movie Reviews of K-19: The WidowmakerMovie Review: K-19 The Unseen Gem! Summary: 5 Stars
K-19: The Widowmaker is a compelling, tense, superior real-life drama that, for some reason, did not draw a big U.S. box-office. Those who didn't see it missed quite a movie! With stellar performances by Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, a cast of excellent young actors, and with terrific Direction by Kathryn Bigelow, this film draws you into the tension and dangers of the Cold War like few films ever have. Before K-19: The Widowmaker came out, few of us knew that we had come perilously close to a nuclear exchange over a year before the Cuban Missile Crisis! And few of us who grew up believing every Russian was a villan, would have ever known that, except for the bravery of the K-19 submarine's Russian crew, and the strength of its Officers, nuclear disaster was narrowly averted. If you didn't see this movie when it was out this past summer, buy the DVD (I expect those who DID see it will be buying it to watch over and over again).
Movie Review: A very Important film to see Summary: 5 Stars
If you doubt our President and our government for keeping Iraq from having Nukes you need to see this movie. This movie explains loud and clear why some countries should not have nuclear power let alone nuclear weapons. You can see in this movie without the right safty standards you will have a dissaster .The Russians had more than one accident like this . K-19 was small compared to the 1986 dissaster at CHORNOBYL .Eight thousand people died at that accident from radiation sickness when a nuclear reactor blew sky high. It also caused fallout in parts of north and eastern Europe to countries close to Russia. The U.S.A. almost had an accident in 1980 at Three mile Island but the key word is (almost). The United States had the right safty standards. But the real question is "Do you think Saddam will have safe standards?" I doubt it. What do you think?..... Sleep tight
Movie Review: ONE OF THE BEST SUBMARINE "TRUE-STORIES" FEATURES RUSSIAN HEROES Summary: 5 Stars
IN A NUTSHELL: UNDERRATED - UNDERVALUED - UNDEREXPOSED -
Excellent submarine thriller with the added attraction of having been based on a true historic event! It is hard to believe how poorly this excellent film did at the box-office.
Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson are ideally suited as Soviet naval Captains, and as believable as their rebuilt authentic K-19! Kathryn Bigelow who Directed and Produced the film did an incredible job, which can be better appreciated by viewing the 3 excellent featurettes that are included on the DVD.
BOTTOM LINE: THIS NEW KIND OF SUB FILM IS A PART OF HISTORY
If you enjoy submarine films this is one of the best. If you enjoy thrillers, this film delivers enough edge-of-your-seat tension and authentic submarine situations to satisfy both the submarine-movie and thriller-enthusiast in anyone.
Movie Review: Great!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best docudramas I've ever seen. The action was tremendous. The 2 lead actors Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson are worth watching over and over again. The story does not get too technical so as to disassociate the viewer but it does grab you and dosen't let go until the very end. The director puts you into the action both emotionally and almost physically the way the story plays out. I'm a child of the cold war and to root for our advasaries (the Russians) is a very strange sensation but by the time the K-19 starts to encounter the usual bureacratic problems that threaten to destroy the submarine and all who sail in her, you can't do anything else but root for the "bad guys". This is also an important tale to tell historically speaking and should be told. You will not regret buying this movie on DVD. Buy it now!!
Movie Review: I`ll admit, I`m biased.... Summary: 5 Stars
... I liked it. It`s tough for a movie to make you feel claustrophobic in your living room, but this one did. The sound effects were wonderful, and the music was very Soviet. Nice touch. The effects of radiation were lovingly and nauseatingly rendered. I didn`t really sympathise with the Captain until the end, when it becomes clear just how much he`s trying to balance his loyalty to the party with his loyalty towards the crew. Whether that was due to the script or Ford`s acting choices, I`m still not sure, but it seemed like he was a tough guy who had a quick change of heart. The accents didn`t bother me as much as I thought they would. I sort of disregarded them pretty quickly. I agree with the previous reviewer who noted the lack of cigarettes. Major glaring anachronism there.... Overall, I liked it. ...
