Movie Reviews of Just One of the Guys

Movie Review: Teen Version of Yentl
Summary: 4 Stars

Just One Of The Guys is a teenaged version of Barbara Streisand's movie Yentl. In both, a young woman disguises herself as a male for academic reasons (Yentl to study the Torah and Terry for journalism). The main difference is that Terry only perceives a sexist split while in Yentl it is a reality.

so, girl becomes guy, finds wonderful guy while disguised as a guy, and tries to figure out how to win guy when she has been living a lie.

In the end in order to convince the love interest that she is really a woman, Terry has to flash her breasts (Barbara did the same but was below camera shot) for the then obligatory topless shot in a PG-13 movie.

Unlike Yentl, this is much more of a comedy and is definitely aimed at teens. Still, the humor holds up even if the plot was ridiculous (Terry actually changes schools with no identification, doesn't flunk the school she is not attending, pulls it all off without parents finding out (they are missing from the entire film)).

For those who are interested, you can check out Yentl with Barbara Streisand, or you can read the original (and better) Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy by Isaac Bashevis Singer (it at least makes sense).

Movie Review: aspect ratio
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm no expert but I believe this movie was filmed in a soft matted widescreen format (right terminology?). Meaning, the director shot the film matted for wide screen while simultaneously filming in a 4:3 aspect ratio for television. So with the full frame release you see more above and below the wide screen format. It's quite obvious when you are aware of this technique but at least it's not a chopped up pan and scan version. I may be wrong but my eyes tell me I see more film not pan and scan (you'll notice ceiling shots, etc.)

Few more comments:

The video transfer is descent. IMHO, it's a definite upgrade from VHS. There's no trailer for the movie itself but for those interested, not including me, there's 3 trailers for the movies "Charlies Angels: Full throttle", "Mona Lisa Smile", and "What Ever it Takes". The main menu sports the front cover of the dvd keep case. The subtitle menu reveals buddy posing in a robe with a smoking pipe tucked in his boxers.

Last note:

If your a fan of the movie I wouldn't hesitate adding this dvd to your collection, otherwise, a rental should be considered at the most..

thanks,

Movie Review: Amusing flashback
Summary: 4 Stars

This was one of my favorite movies when it came out but, from past experience with watching movies from the 80s now, I was a little cautious about buying this one. When it came down to $9.99, I decided that was cheap enough to risk on a movie that may not be as good as I remembered. There were some definite "bad 80s teen movie" moments, but overall it makes for an entertaining movie.

A recent review said that her original article was on being a female disguised as a male jock. It was actually about the nutrition of school lunches. Her article about being a female disguised as a male (but not a jock) was written after her experiences of passing as a teen male, which she did because she was convinced her article was rejected because she was female. Following the formula, there are some embarrassing moments and she learns a lot about herself in the process. The movie is fairly predictable...not annoyingly so, but more like the predictability of an old friend.

While this is nowhere near award-winning anything, it is a fun movie to watch.

Movie Review: Joyce Hyser a guy. come on
Summary: 4 Stars

I enjoyed this movie although it's hard to think anyone could mistake Joyce for a guy even before the breast baring scene, which rates 5 stars ( Joyce has said that scene haunted her for the rest of her career which is a shame because she's a decent actress, see LA Law). The movie is filled with typical characters you find in these teenage flicks. A very young and starting out Sherilynn Fenn is in it trying to become Joyce's love interest. The actor who plays Joyce's younger brother does an excellant job and is quite funny. If you like teenage flicks you'll enjoy this if not run don't walk away from it.

Movie Review: Very Funny!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw this on tv a few hours ago, and I thought it was really good! Although I missed the first half, I got what was going on. Sexy beautiful Joyce Hyser did an awesome job as playing a girl, dressing up like a guy. She plays a journalist who thinks that her teachers don't take her seriously because she is a woman. She disguises as a dude. She helps Rick get a girl, and she has girls hitting on her. Soon, she begins to fall in love with Rick, but he thinks she is a man. If you love gender-bender comedies, you'll love JUST ONE OF THE GUYS!!!
