Movie Reviews of Just One of the GuysMovie Review: To the person who said this is not a classic........ Summary: 5 Stars
Now, this movie may not have been known well when it came out in 1985, but, it's popularity grew as much as it has been shown on tv (Countless times). Now, let's say that John Hughes produced this film; I bet you that it would have been much better known if it had his name on it; Thus, at the time that this movie came out, John Hughes had some big hits under his belt (I.E. Sixteen Candles, & The Breakfast club to name a couple). If it had Molly Ringwald as the lead actress, then it would have been a bigger hit. Joyce Hyser, however, wasn't/ isn't a VERY well known (If known) actress. So, alot of people really didn't pay much attention to this movie. I mean, what really big hit movies or starring roles did Ms. Hyser have really? This and a few others were her ONLY starring roles. From what i've seen of her movies besides this one and another, she mostly had small parts. Like, Does anyone remember seeing Ms. Hyser in the 80's classic "Valley Girl"(Starring Nicholas Cage)? The ONLY scene she was in was at the prom at the end asking "Where are the cups?", and, that was it.
True, this movie may not be "Fantastic", but, it was ALOT better then some of those cheesy 80's movies that came out around the same time. I personally think this movie was well-acted, and, cute for it's time. It's honestly underrated, but, by it showing on HBO, and, Comedy Central ALOT it's popularity grew. Hence, why they FINALLY released it on Dvd. It may not be a known "classic", like, "Pretty In Pink", "Sixteen Candles", "The Breakfast Club", and "St. Elmoes Fire", but, it's a classic in it's own right. I think if better known at the time, people wouldn't of slepted on this classic.
Joyce hyser was wonderful in this role. And, I think it's honestly her best, and, I am glad it's finally being appreciated after 21 years! I am soo glad they talked about it on vh1's "I Love The 80's 3-D" last year.
Movie Review: Come On...You Gotta Love This One! Summary: 5 Stars
I graduated in 1986 and am a true 80's teen flick buff. I have seen bunches of them and admit to being a fan of most of them. One thing I don't like is when people take a teen comedy of this nature and try to over analyze it to death with technical this and that jargon. Take it for what it is..about 100 minutes of a good time. To me if you can say was I entertained for the time I spent watching this movie, then it was a good movie. Just One of The Guys is a movie to me that never really got promoted properly. It is a great teen movie with plenty of laughs and the first time I saw it I knew I wanted to own it. Joyce Hyser does a nice job with the main character and the other cast members play their roles respectfully. The one who steals the show however is Billy Jacoby who plays the kid brother "Buddy". Every time he comes on screen you just have to start laughing because he is a complete genious with his character. His one liners and body language are a riot. How this guy never got another prominant role in a mainstream movie is beyond comprehension to me. His agent must have been horrible. I have seen him in some Bud Light commercials and Leap Frog childrens book commercials but what a shame we didn't see more of him on the big screen. If you want a good laugh sometime, check out this movie...a true sleeper for those of you who know how to laugh. Go Buddy!!
Movie Review: GO ON.....SHOW ME HAIRY CHEST!! Summary: 5 Stars
This was one of many 80's comedy flicks I watched over and over when I was a child. It's a very funny movie about an angry female student who is told she can't make it as a reporter because she is beautiful and stereotyped as being empty-headed and not serious about a career. So believing it's a sexist discrimination against her abilities, she goes to a different school dressed as a guy, (I thought she did such a great acting job acting like a geeky, whimpy boy) But then she is told the same thing about her sex (just because you're a guy it doesn't mean you can't write with emotion and sensitivity) something like that, when she turned in the same piece. So she sticks around for research so she can write a different story and is acquainted with the leader bully Greg Toland, who beats up the weaker guys in the school and likes to dump lunch tables all over the students while they're eating, especially the nerds. Next, Terry is befriended by a guy (Rick) who she ends up falling in love with. Yes, it's a very "80's" flick, but alot of fun and laughs. Not to mention Terry's hilarious and horny younger brother who is desperately trying to get a date throughout the movie, to put it mildly... hehe.
Movie Review: Cute but predictable :-> Summary: 5 Stars
When this first came out, I watched it so often. It's still a good movie although obviously outdated in more ways than one.
Terry Griffith wants to be taken seriously as a reporter, but feels that she is held back because she is a girl. What does she do? She transfers schools and dresses like a guy to write the ultimate story. Of course, she already had a boyfriend, but he's a bit of a jerk and she finds herself falling for her best male friend who doesn't know her secret. There are no surprises in this movie - it's very predictable, but it's still funny and fun to watch. Her brother Buddy is hilarious and he has the quote of the whole movie. When Terry asks him if he is OK, he sadly replies, "No I'm not ok. Mom and Dad come home Monday. I've had two weeks of total freedom. The closest I've come to sex was a girl who took her top off to seduce my sister". It's a classic movie that will make you laugh and is thoroughly enjoyable.
Movie Review: One of the best teen flicks of the 80's!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This was truly one of the best teen flicks of the 80's. From start to finish this was a great movie all the way through. The only downfall is the fact it is a fullscreen release. for those of you holding out until it is released in widescreen format do not hold your breath. While it is a great movie and one of my personl favorites it was made in an era where it was overshadowed by blockbusters such as real genius, ghostbusters, starwars, Indians jones ETC. But even though it is fullscreen the quality of the picture more than makes up for it! This movie is 20 years old and it looks better on dvd than half of the movies that are out on dvd today!!! or just raleased! So if you truly enjoyed this film just give in to the fullscreen format and get it today!!!!! "Who do you think you are tootsie?!!!!, Okay Yentl!!!!!!"
