Movie Reviews of Joyeux Noel (Widescreen)Movie Review: Excellent introduction to World War One themes Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first film in which I saw Daniel Bruhl and Guillaume Canet, and this is also one of the first films (though not the very first) that introduced me to European cinema. While it is sentimental, it benefits from a good script, great cast, and stunning cinematography. While not as hard-hitting as "A Very Long Engagement" or "Behind the Lines", the point to the whole thing is the very unexpected friendships that can grow between two sides during the fighting. It is a film that demonstrates the emotional impact war has on those who fight it, without driving that point home with a sledgehammer. I really enjoyed this film, and it did push me into a greater interest in World War One. While emotionally significant, the film does not make you crave an insulin shot afterwards. I must say this is one of my absolute favorite films, and I have already watched it many, many times .
Movie Review: Light shines through the fog of war Summary: 5 Stars
I don't mean to sound over hyping, but to some, i'm sure I will. Still, This is one of my two favorite films in recent memory, one I'll choose to watch many times. In fact, along with Ron Howard's "Cinderella Man", it's one to which my wife will will be opening the door and exclaiming, "Oh, no, you're not watching that again!" It does certainly bring to mind the film "It came Upon Midnight Clear", but it touched me more deeply, and as an anti-war film, or, as a film showing the human faces of war regardless of which side the soldiers are on, or who runs wars and who really has to fight them, no other film has done a better job bring all these points and more home to me. I'm a major film fan, and I can sincerely place this film in my top 20 films of all time, and I am surprised it hasn't gotten more attention.
Movie Review: Magnifique!!! Summary: 5 Stars
As a french woman who had her great-grand father taking part of this war (he fight in Verdun in 1916) and her grand-father in French Resistance during the WWII, I was very moved by this movie. It shows that, despite of horror, we need hope and desesperately look for humanity that exists in all of us. It also proves how stupid and useless war can be.
What I liked in this movie is that it shows that we are all equals : the German (who invaded my country in 1940) are shown in all their humanity. This movie is not about politic, it is about humanity. Because things are never simple : my grand-father who was Resistant during the WWII was saved from death by a German. Without this german man, he would have died.
This movie should inspire the political leaders of the world we live in.
Movie Review: best film on Christmas Summary: 5 Stars
This is without a doubt the best movie I saw about what Christmas is or should be. Better than Christmas Tale or several Hollywood films. At the same time it is a superb anti-war drama, showing the stupidity of the I WW, and is also a condemnation of the negative role an organized religion and fanaticism can play fostering hatred and racial/religious/political prejudices. Also director's comments and interview that are included in the extras on the disc are very worthwile. In the interview he tells, for ex., a fascinating story about a cat which was court-martialled and shot during the I WW (not a joke!) or about a lady who is a granddaughter of a German participant of those events who after the war went to France to visit their French participant and married there her future grandmother.
Movie Review: The power to stop killing... Summary: 5 Stars
Wars are noted by many heroic events. It is one thing to be able to kill the enemy. It is quite another to choose not to kill. When the enemy also chooses not to kill the results are overwhelming and emotional. There is far more joy in peace than in war, even if that peace is short lived. This story shows just what can be done when the choice of both sides is to stop killing. I am sure that the participants will look back at the war and remember this event more than any other achievement in battle. More honor to them for exercising the power to stop killing. It also shows clearly the hypocrisy of the Church leadership and the military generals. It's kind of hard to fight a war when the soldiers decide to stop killing one another! Too bad it didn't continue...
