Movie Review: An amazing, real-life story about how the Christmas spirit can triumph even during war
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a must-see!!! This DVD is in English, German, and French, and chronicles the amazing story that happened during World War I at Christmastime. Instead of taking the opportunity to spring a surprise attack during Christmas Eve, the Germans, armed with only Christmas trees and songs, crossed no-man's land to meet the French and Scottish troops. The trenches emptied, and for Christmas the men celebrated together, regardless of race or religion. Many men became friends, exchanged addresses, planned to meet after the war, etc. After the holiday, they couldn't shoot each other - they were no longer enemies, but friends. The commanding officers, who had not experienced this amazing event firsthand, found out about it, and transfered all the troops to different fronts. The DVD has bonus features that tell some awesome stories - how these men really did remain friends after the war. In this day and age, it's important to remember the deep down inside, we're really all the same and that a soft answer turns away rath - in this case, temporarily stopped a war.

Movie Review: excellant
Summary: 5 Stars

this is a wonderful movie, just wonderful. it does send a strong message, but I think it doesn't get too preachy. given the state of the world today, it is good to remember that many of those who pick up a gun and fight in wars do it for a number of reasons. no man is a complete monster, and the job is thankless and sickening most days.

i felt a great deal of compassion for the average guys in this film that were fighting for the arrogant politicians and rulers of their time. it's a shame the "royalty" didn't leave their parties and mansions and pick up a gun. how little that has changed today.

this film is well worth watching. it has tremendous heart, and bravo to those that made it. i don't agree with everything that has come out of europe lately, but sometimes something rare and special gets through.

add this movie to your collection. if you have family members that are in the military, see it. there's a wonderful message here. it certainly fits with the christmas season.

Movie Review: The futility of war
Summary: 5 Stars

I had heard of the WWI story, "Joyeux Noel" conveys sometime ago which describes opposing fighting fronts coming to a halt during the early years of WWI to jointly celebrate Christmas Eve. Spoken in French, German and English, I was especially grantified when the respective native tongues of the combatants were used. The two German singers along with the bagpipers on the Scottish side were able to put together a Christmas carol which had that unique power of causing an immediate cease fire(at least temporarily). (I suspect that both the tenor and soprano singing voices were dubbed into the actors Benno Fuermann and Diane Krueger who most effectively played their characters). The Christmas music was most effective in bringing all the combatants together to celebrate Christmas Eve with bottles of champagne joining together in brotherhood and putting aside the horrors of war. One could only ask, why is there this senseless war in the first place?

Movie Review: What a Great Story.
Summary: 5 Stars

Do not be frightened by the French title and the promise of subtitles. The story revolves around Scottish, German, and French soldiers, so there are going to be subtitles for the French and German dialogue. But this movie is well worth the "hassle" of reading. **I do not feel it's a hassle, but I work in TV rental and that's what I'm told when I suggest foreign films.**

The main actors give brilliant performances. Guillaume Canet is terrific as the French leader. He does a good job portraying his character as conflicted; torn between his duty as an officer, and his duty as a human being. Daniel Bruhl leads the German side as a compassionate man who tries to be a tough officer. The Scottish are...well...the Scottish. The acting is terrific, and the cinematography captures the essence of being a WWI soldier in the trenches. If you pass on this movie, you will be doing yourself a great injustice.

Movie Review: A MOVIE THAT CELEBRATES THE GOOD IN ALL OF US!
Summary: 5 Stars

The event depicted in "Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas)" is so amazing, no dramatist could dare to have dreamed it up. The little-known event referred to as the Christmas Eve Truce of December 24, 1914, when French, German and British/Scottish soldiers met in the fields of No Man's Land in the middle of World War I, is a story that celebrates the good in all men, and how soldiers can put aside the fact that they are enemies and celebrate the Birth of Christ together. It was ripe for a film about the momentous event. And "Joyeux Noel" delivers! While it definitely takes poetic license in some scenes, it is a very powerful film that gives the viewer a sense of how amazing, and how truly momentous, this event was. The cast and crew do a very commendable job of bringing this moment in history to the screen. It is a film that will become a cherished Christmas classic for years to come!
