I do not know why I have never watched this delightful little musical before especially when I have been so busy doing research on Joseph. I decided to give it a look-see this weekend and I was amazingly surprised by it. This DVD is the filmed adaptation of the storyof Joseph who after being betrayed by his brothers is sold into slavery and taken to Egypt where he is beset by problems.
Joseph manages to rise above his adversities and perseveres through faith and wit, ultimately rising to become governor of Fgypt. This background sets the scene for when his brothers come to Egypt to purchase food.
The music is wonderful and the singers and actors are just as good. Unlike some filmed musicals, the stage lighting and the view of the stage made the viewer feel as if he was watching an actual performance. I found the entire production to be dazzling and I think one of the plusses of this production was that this is a musical that returned to its roots as it was originally written to be a school stage show. The songs are performed beautifully and there seems to be nothing amiss with this production.

This particular DVD had some sound troubles. At times the volume would go down and it was hard to hear. Then it would go up and be too loud.
I have another copy of this musical and it had no problems so I think I just got a faulty DVD.

Movie Review: The Best Joseph

I love this production. Webber and Rice have done such an amazing job of weaving the story of Joseph in with almost every musical genre there is. Our kids were in the children's chorus in the old days. It is so fun to listen and sing along.

We also love to watch and listen to Donny Osmond sing. The voice control and technique he shows are impeccable, and emotion he brings fits the story perfectly. The acting and non-verbal communication of the actors (singers) is superb. We especially like the narrator, Maria Friedman.

I found this to be one of the most beautiful pieces that I have ever seen. Marcia Freidman as the narrator is superb! I have looked for other works of hers based on this performance. I can't get the songs out of my head!
