Movie Review: Too much montage - not enough Jaco

I bought this DVD because of so many reviews that recommended it as having great footage of Jaco and the ensemble in general. I agree, the music is great! I was a big Joni fan at 19, my kids are now older than that... and she really hasn't changed that much. But having the kind of backup she did on this tour, well now that's a change! Now,if I could have kicked back and watched this concert from beginning to end without all the annoyance and distraction of the "joni-ized" video montage being interjected throughout a single song, and sometimes for an entire song...I would have given this DVD 5 stars.
The montage however relevant it was suppose to be by adding some sort of visual metaphor to Joni's lyrics... is dated, very unnecessary and diminished the value of this historical meeting of musical genius.
I'm gonna have to dump the audio track to a CD in order to enjoy it to its fullest.
Joni may have thought she was being creative at the time, but stoned is what I think she was. In retrospect, it's downright sinful to have cut out all that concert footage and replace it with scenes from James Dean movies, National geographics and America's funniest videos. All that said, I bought it for Jaco, and well I did get something I had never seen or heard before, Jaco was in his prime, played brilliantly, God rest his soul, and for that, the DVD is well worth every penny.

Witness this 73-minute document from her '79 tour, which finds her backed by her greatest band ever, including guitarist Pat Metheny and the extraordinary bassist Jaco Pastorius, as well as Metheny cohort Lyle Mays (keyboards), Michael Brecker (sax), and Don Alias (drums). Mitchell's The Hissing of Summer Lawns-Hejira-Mingus period is heavily favored; there are two tunes from Court and Spark, but nothing earlier. It's not perfect--the film clips edited into the live tracks (at Mitchell's direction) are an annoying distraction (Rebel Without a Cause? Huh?). But by the time Mitchell, Mays, and vocal group the Persuasions finish a spine-tingling version of the title song, you'll have witnessed something special--and historic, as this was the only time this stellar crew toured together. --Sam Graham
