Movie Reviews of Johnny BelindaMovie Review: Made For the Oscars Summary: 4 Stars
Belinda (Jane Wyman) is a deaf mute living in a small town. As a result, she has not been given the care she needs to communicate with the world, and is a lonely girl. When a local doctor (Lew Ayres) is summoned to the home to assist with a cow, he discovers Belinda and becomes curious about her. He has worked with deaf mutes before, and wonders if he could help her. Before long, the two are friends and Belinda is learning to read lips. Unfortunately, her confidence leads her to trust the wrong people, and she is raped by a local brute (Stephen McNally). Her family takes care of her and her baby, but small town rumor hurts them greatly.
This is a rather sentimental movie, and the subject matter guaranteed the leading lady and Oscar win, as well as eleven other nominations. There are also spurts of humor, which keep a serious film spirited. The town gossips provide conflict as well as comic relief.
"Mrs. Moore is her own worst enemy."
"Not while I'm alive, she isn't."
Overall, this is a worthwhile film.
Movie Review: Jane Wyman is great! The story is moving Summary: 4 Stars
I just "discovered" Jane Wyman a couple of weeks ago when I saw "All that Heaven Allows," another Wyman triumph. In "Johnny Belinda" she plays a lonely deaf woman who has never learned a way to communicate with the world. Then, along comes a lonely doctor who makes it his business to teach her. Of course, none of this goes unnoticed by the small town residents that surround them. The story is engrossing and moving, but really the film is worth watching for Wyman's wordless performance alone--she's really one of the best. Don't know how I avoided seeing her all these years but I sure plan on checking out any of her movies I can get ahold of. Also, Agnes Moorehead (who apparently made quite a few films with Wyman) gives another spectacular performance as Wyman's spinster aunt.
Movie Review: Poor thing! Summary: 4 Stars
Johnny Belinda starring Jane Wyman is a gentle and important film. Wyman gave the performance of her career (she won the Oscar for best actress)she is so vulnerable and real as a mute who is raped and no one believes her. Parts of the film are dated and overblown but Johnny Belinda is still a good film, check it out sometime.
