Movie Review: ONE OF THE BEST INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS EVER!!

I have been playing guitar for a long time, but I have always been intimidated when it comes to soloing. For some reason, I felt that it was long over due that I started to learn how to play lead, and this video was critical to learning!!
First, for anybody who doesn't know who John Petrucci is, he is the virtuosso guitarist for the progressive/art metal band Dream Theater.
The video is broken down in many segments and each one will expand your ability. The beggining consists of streching exercises that guitarist commenly overlook, but are very critical to playing without developing carppel-tunnel, or even worse, tendonitis. The next part consists of a series of warm-up exercises for both the right and left hand that may take a little time to nail, but once you have it down, it will increase your accuracy dramatically!! Next, he demostrates how to build speed and accuracy with a simple A minor pattern. He shows, in detail that one should start off SLOW and make sure that not only should you make sure that the notes are clean and clear, but the space between the notes should be even and consistant. As he plays the patterns, he plays with a metronome, wich is a 'click' device that substitutes for the drums. It is VERY important to understand the 'time' and 'beat' of a musical pattern, as well as sub-dividing the 'beat'. As he demonstrates the different patterns, he gets faster and faster! Next, John demonstrates how to create what he calls fragments, then combines them into full blown solos. One, interesting thig, he takes just one fragment and plays it repeatedly, but changes the speed of it, to show how to expand on just one 'lick'. In addition, he includes string skipping wich WILL improve a players accuracy!! After which, he plays an improvised solo with all the fragments and scales he went over to show how to put it all together. Next comes the arpeggios. I have ALWAYS had a problem with arpeggios, notes in any given chord picked individually with a consistant down, down, down, and up, up, up, pattern. this may sound easy, but when you apply the left had technique and the speed required to make it sound right, it becomes very hard. Next he demonstrates 'Legato playing' which is a series of hammer on's and pull off's with the left hand. This will give your fingers of the left hand a SERIOUS workout, and should be played slow at first, and slowly increase speed. If one jumps into this to quickly, severe damage could be done to your hand!! Finally, John shows how to create different 'voicings' by adding 7ths and 9ths to traditional 'power chords' to give them a unique 'color' and 'flavor'.
This video is 2 hours in length and VERY much worth the price tag, he11, even if it was twice the price it would still be worth it!! Because people learn in different ways, in addition to having the visual(video) lessons the DVD comes with a TAB/notation booklet containing ALL the info. on the DVD!! One thing that needs to be addressed is that if your looking for a video to help out with scales, modes, and music theory in general, this video is not for you. The video is exclusively for mechanics and technique!!
I cannot recommend this video enough because it opened a door for me and made me a much, much better player!!
