Movie Reviews of Jinki: Extend Complete Collection

Movie Review: A nice mecha series. Could have been better.
Summary: 3 Stars

When it comes down to mecha series it's very hard to find a really good one. For the simple fact you will almost always find the fingerprints of something else all over it. Jinki extend at times feels like it's own series but this is one time it doesn't really work out. Now thanks to mecha series such as Neon Genesis Evangelion & Rahxephon setting the bar so high. Jinki Extend to me comes off as another average series.

The story begins with a young girl named Aoba Tsuzaki being kidnapped and taken to a facility. She escapes and ends up inside of a mecha unit being preped for battle. It is then revealed later she has a natural talent to pilot the mecha. The organization she is captured by is called "Angel". Angel is at war with another organization that uses mechas called Ancient Jinki. Angel uses mechas called Moribito which is derived from the same technology as the Ancient Jinki.

Jinki Extend does have a few things going for it. The storytelling is pretty good building up it's characters in the first few episodes. I found myself interested and wanting to find out what happens next. This part is a huge plus. Jinki is very, very limited on psychobabble and introducing religious themes for the flimsiest reasons. Those who didn't care for NGE's deeper themes and angst ridden characters will welcome Jinki with open arms.

The animation is very good and the mecha battles does a really good job on flaunting its goods. This is when the animation is at its best. Especially in the middle and towards the end. The soundtrack is good and used at the right times but I felt it could have been better.

Jinki does have its flaws. It's too short for one which led to some characters not really being developed. The characters although likable, never moved me emotionally. Some of the interactions were ok but it just didn't have that "it" factor. Several questions aren't answered either clearly or not at all. Plus, somewhere in the middle it takes a weird turn that will have you saying "whats going on?" It doesn't hurt the story at all but you will be momentarily confused. Also for a mecha series, it was very limited on tragedy. Jinki does have a good ending and this set also has an extra episode that wasn't originally aired. Jinki was really 12 episodes.

I feel brand new anime fans looking for mecha titles shouldn't start here. Jinki is a good series but I wouldn't consider it a must see. If you already seen NGE, Rah, or Fafner. Then I guess Jinki would be a nice watch. But I kind of wish I put this one off for a while longer.

Summary of Jinki: Extend Complete Collection

In 13-year-old Aoba Tsuzaki's world everything seems normal. An over-the-top modeling fanatic she spends her days locked in her room happily building plastic robots. But rumbling beneath the surface an evil enemy of mankind (the Ancient Jinki) threatens to destroy the Earth. And when a cross-dressing kidnapper brings Aoba face-to-face with a real fighting machine her robot dreams give way to frightening nightmares. She is unwittingly recruited into Angel an elite fighting force who not only pits its giant robots against the Ancient Jinki but against an unseen evil that is working behind the scenes. Jinki:Extend is a world of explosive action arresting intrigue and battle-trained babes who are bent on revenge! Nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted. But one thing is for sure: she's in for a seriously wild ride!Contains all 13 episodes!System Requirements:Running Time: 325 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: ANIMATION/ANIME UPC: 702727156229 Manufacturer No: DJK/BX1
Based on a manga by Sirou Tunasima, the adventure series Jinki Extend (2005) combines magical girl and mecha elements. Aoba Tsuzaki, a seemingly ordinary 13-year-old who loves robot models, is taken to a mysterious land where giant robots engage in deadly battles. Fascinated by the gigantic Moribito-2, Aoba meets its pilots, hot-headed Ryohei Ogawa and his gentle father, Genta. Aoba is a cognate, a human with special abilities to control the Moribito. Her talents and enthusiasm earn Aoba a berth in Angel, an elite team fighting the Ancient Jinki, "mechanical life-forms" that attack humans. These actions have been planned by Aoba's estranged mother Shizuka, who runs Angel. The mecha battles are well-staged, and the filmmakers make the Moribito feel like a massive machine. But these effects can't disguise that Jinki Extend is a shamelessly clone of Evangelion, with a few elements from Patlabor thrown in.(Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, some profanity) --Charles Solomon
