Movie Reviews of Jimi Plays BerkeleyMovie Review: Annoying to watch / Great to listen Summary: 3 Stars
What was going on back around this time with the cameramen / directors? Most of the concert footage can be characterized by the low angle shot of the front musician as the zoom crawls into the adenoids and nasal passages in the most graphic - and horrible - detail. I just saw this approach in an otherwise excellent FESTIVAL EXPRESS with Janis. Her song consisted of nothing but a close up of her from the shoulders up: a dermatologist's bonanza! Who was in her excellent Full Tilt Boogie Band? We'll never know. This film is no exception. Out of the entire 56 minutes, the cutaways to Billy and Mitch can be calibrated in mere seconds. Crowd shots are less than fleeting. If you enjoy see Jimi play his guitar, you'll still be frustrated because there's very little here of even that. Instead we're left with these marathon close ups of his impassioned face ... just one piece of the puzzle.
Movie Review: I feel slightly cheated Summary: 3 Stars
This dvd could've been sooo great. From the different clips i've seen, this was a great show. the problem is.. the length of the footage from this dvd almost equals footage shown on other films. the way this show is butchered makes it seem like jimi came on, ran thru three songs for each show and left. the actual footage, with the performance, interviews, protest footage and other random stuff is a whopping 45 min.... yes 45 min. on the bright side, jimi, mitch and billy play brilliantly for the short time they're shown. Also, the audio for the entire second show is included. hopefully one day, they'll release footage of at least one of the entire shows ala woodstock, blue wild angel and band of gypsies. films that truly illustrated why jimi was one of the greatest of our time
Movie Review: Great Concert....OK filmed Summary: 3 Stars
Jimi in May 1970, what can be better?
Jimi was peaking in 1970, a new recordking studio he owned was about complete, tons of new material for his next album which was about finished (never to be released in his lifetime).
The Berekely concerts were great, but the film lacks a ton! The camera men "shaked" the cameras for some cheap visual effects, the songs are often incomplete (they said they did this to save film), then there is inserted some Hippy Protest about the Woodstock movie, totaly unrealated, put in just to fill some time.
The total running time is 50 mins.
But hey, it is Jimi and the sound has been remastered to 5.1
Movie Review: nice time capsule of an overrated musician Summary: 3 Stars
Could anyone live up to the hype bestowed upon Hendrix? No. Does he come even close? No. As funk/rock guitarists of the late 60's go, he was one of the more interesting. This film gives a good picture of the times in which he played with student unrest and riot control in full swing. If you want to hear and see a good version of Johnny B Goode then this film gives you a chance to see a version that is almost as good as Johnny Winter's live version. Who knows, maybe if he'd gotten off the drugs he could have been able to deal with being just an average guitarist who had run out of musical ideas.
Movie Review: Jimi Plays Berkeley DVD Summary: 3 Stars
Always great to watch Jimi play. DVD says it contains the complete second set which may only be partially true. Noticed a lot of chopped up parts, including some killer solos that are completely cut out. Not the best camera angles used. I've seen other versions of this video that contain more footage. Feels like this video is to short or incomplete.
