Movie Reviews of Jim Henson's the Storyteller - The Definitive CollectionMovie Review: A Must-have for Jim Henson Fans Summary: 4 StarsThese series are excellent, and you really can't beat the price (two complete series in one set for less than $15!). I didn't watch them when they were on HBO, but I really thought they were well done when I put them on after it was delivered. They are interesting short stories, some I was familiar with, most I was not. My favorite was the Soldier and Death. And I must say it was really fun realizing who all the actors in the different stories are. For Harry Potter fans out there, a lot of the cast are in these two series! I definitely recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy and Jim Henson's creations.
Movie Review: Blast from the Past!! Summary: 5 StarsI was so excited to discover this on Amazon!! It's just another reason why I love Amazon.com. I would have never known this series was out on DVD. I am sooo happy!!! It is a wonderful collection!! There are a few different editions; but this one is THE ONE to own! I love watching these episodes again. If you like fantasy and you love Jim Henson, this is definitely a must own!
Movie Review: First rate storyteller Summary: 5 Stars I've only watched about half of the episodes in this collection, and already I feel confident enough to call it first rate! This series has all the special effects and excellent puppetry common to Jim Henson productions, but combines with these clever wit and word play(story-telling) that is bereft in modern television.
I consider this the best Jim Henson production, next to the Dark Crystal in quality. Moreover, there are no crude or excessively violent elements, making the series appropriate for the young of all ages! Highly recommended.
Movie Review: Good potential, poor outcome Summary: 2 StarsAs I did not see this show as a kid I was very keen on doing so, due to the good rewievs it had gotten on this site. But I was quite disapointed.
Although well-cast and well-crafted it, being a show for kids, lacks of aiming for any particular audience. As it is clearly too violent for the smaller children it also includes diversive plots in witch can be hard for any kid to follow. Sympathetic characters become less sympathetic in a way that makes the stories' spine hard to cling to.
Being a huge fan of John Hurt, especially from films like "Watership Down" & "The Plague Dogs", I did enjoy most of his performances on the first disc. As for the dog I wouldn't him taking a nap or dining out. His explanations or questions are informative, still very old-fashioned in its way of handing out morals and ethics.
Disc one is by far the best, although for Greek Mythology fans, like myself, it does some pleasure. Having picked, and rearranged, not the most thrilling stories of ancient Greece it does make you think of other things while watching.
If you are to watch fairytales in the style of Jim Henson, grab "The Dark Crystal" or "Labyrinth" instead.
Movie Review: A hidden gem to say the least Summary: 4 StarsThis is a compilation of episodes of a short lived series from the 80s or 90s. I didn't know the series even existed but my wife asked if we could get the DVD, as she had fond memories of it.
As we watch the various episodes I am constantly surprised at the quality of the production and performances. Far from being just kiddie tales, each story has appeal for us as adults and keeps us interested from start to finish.
