Movie Review: Even Better Than I Remembered

This is an absolutely amazing set of stories. I remember watching these when I was just tiny and I loved them, so when they came out on DVD I jumped at the chance to own them. I've had my copy for years now and never bothered to write a review. I think most everything has been covered by other reviewers. These are great stories and fantastically fun to watch. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this. Which brings me to why I decided to write a review. There aren't very many bad reviews for this, but I was appalled at the reasons for these bad reviews it does have. If you don't like it, fine, don't like it, but I absolutely hate it when someone gives something a bad review for some reason other than the product itself.
First of all, a broken disc does not a bad film make. I'm sorry if you get a defective one, but that happens sometimes and you can mention it, but I don't really think it's grounds for a bad review. Amazon just sent me a broken disc of Dr. Who a couple of months ago, so I sent it back and got a working one - Easy Peasy. I'm certainly not going to turn around and give Dr. Who a bad review just because my first copy was broken... that's just silly, I love the Doctor.
It drives me crazy when people give a bad review instead of returning it for a working one and judging the film properly.
As for the person who insisted that the film quality is bad and that it's grainy - I really don't know what to tell them because "no it isn't". I have no problems at all with mine. But then again, that person also said that theirs glitched on them and that they've had a lot of DVD's glitch lately so I'm thinking that may have been an issue with their DVD player itself. But who knows.
All I'm saying is that this is great, I loved every second of it and it was even better than I remember. If you're a Jim Henson fan or if you remember the original airing of the show and you liked it, then I'd definitely say that you should pick this up. It's just too cool.

One of Jim Henson's finest hours was the Storyteller series that first aired on HBO in 1987. As with his other non-Muppet creations (Labyrinth), Henson fills the screen with wonderful creatures that have a wisp of a J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy. This collection of nine stories (it does not contain the Greek myths arc) were adapted by Anthony Minghella, who became an Oscar-winning filmmaker a decade later with The English Patient. Minghella weaves the narration of the storyteller (played with aplomb by John Hurt) with dialogue from the stories to beguiling effect; the storyteller doesn't simply introduce the tales.A few of the stories have been available before on video, but this collection starts with the debut, the Emmy-winning "Hans My Hedgehog," the title role being a young disformed man who helps a lost king in the woods. Other highlights include "The Luck Child" about a king bent on destroying a commoner boy, known as the luck child ("the seventh son born of a seventh son on a week with two Fridays"). After a wizard declares the boy will grow up to be king. The fate of the king is one of those hooks that should have the kids smiling for days. Henson himself directs "Death and the Soldier," a brilliant example of how these episodes were so wonderfully complex. A penniless solider (Bob Peck) is given a magical sack and he uses it to full effect, capturing gremlins and greater evils on his way to be king. "Sapsorrow" is a curious variation on the Cinderella legend. "A Story Short" is the storyteller's own adventure. He makes a deal with a king to tell a story every day of the year. Yet on the last day, the storyteller's mind is a blank and his fate may lead him to a boiling vat of oil. Henson's work is true family entertainment and at only 22 minutes per episode, it's the perfect companion for some fine entertainment around the TV. --Doug Thomas
