Movie Review: Becoming The Christ ~ The Transformation Of Robert Powell
Summary: 5 Stars

Possibly the most ambitious motion picture ever to bypass the movie theaters and go directly to the small screen, 'Jesus of Nazareth' was first viewed by the American public in the comfort of their own homes in '77. An epic feature, 6 hours and 22 minutes in length, it was presented in installments over several evenings.

This film version had much in common with the '64 film, 'The Greatest Story Ever Told. 'Jesus of Nazareth' was also directed by one of the true artists in the field, Franco Zeffirelli (Romeo & Juliet, Brother Sun Sister Moon). It also decided to gather together a massive number of well known actors and actresses, taking on a much broader scope of international stars than its predecessor to attract a worldwide audience. Lastly, Zeffirelli chose a veritable unknown to play the role of Jesus. The choice of Robert Powell was the key.

Robert Powell was perfect for the part and was unquestionably the most striking looking Jesus ever. Now almost thirty years since the release of 'Jesus of Nazareth' people still associate the face of Robert Powell with the likeness of the historical Jesus. Wander into a large Christian bookstore sometime and browse through its collection of religious paintings and prints. It's quite likely you'll find a black and white portrait of Jesus as played by Robert Powell. I'm sure many people don't even realize that the face in the picture a carryover from the popularity of this film. Powell's image has been forever linked with the image of Jesus Christ.

This DVD belongs in your collection positioned right next to 'The Greatest Story Ever Told.'

Movie Review: A masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" is magnificent; there are few other words to describe it. Starring Robert Powell in an inspired performance as Jesus, the exceptional cast of this 1977 Anglo-Italian television miniseries dramatizing the life of Jesus includes the lovely Olivia Hussey as the Virgin Mary, and Michael York as John the Baptist.

The rest of its all-star, exquisite cast includes Anne Bancroft, Ian Bannen, Ernest Borgnine, Claudia Cardinale, Valentina Cortese, Cyril Cusack, James Farentino, Ian Holm, James Earl Jones, Stacy Keach, Tony Lo Bianco, Ian McShane, James Mason, Sir Laurence Olivier, Donald Pleasance, Christopher Plummer, Anthony Quinn, Fernando Rey, Sir Ralph Richardson, Rod Steiger and Peter Ustinov. Each one of them is brilliant, along with other members of its cast.

The film is perfect to educate young children about Jesus' life and teachings. It is almost devoid of violence, and it leaves the viewer with a sense of peace and love. One never tires of viewing it again and again. While a few naysayers have given it less than a perfect review, the film has stood the test of time and been acknowledged by most people as the finest cinematic depiction of Jesus' entire life that has ever been made.

Because so many years have passed, it needs to be digitally remastered to produce a first-class, complete restoration of the film, much like what has been accomplished with "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Cleopatra." This will preserve it for posterity so future generations may be blessed by viewing this masterpiece.

Movie Review: Strengthens your faith
Summary: 5 Stars

My thoughts on the movie 'Jesus of Nazareth':

For anyone who studies the Bible on a regular basis, the Word(s) comes to life, and one finds him/herself reciting the dialog while watching the movie. When you see the characters not only speaking, but also in action, the meaning of the Scriptures becomes that much more perceivable, and hopefully much clearer.

I find it odd that this movie isn't regarded as highly as Charlton Heston's Moses movie. I think it has a lot to do with subject matter (if you know what I mean), and the potential for revolutionary change, even in this age. But then, Christianity has done quite well before the invention of cinema.

I saw a documentary on the making of Jesus of Nazareth. One man commented on the fact that if you watch the movie, you will notice that Jesus' eyes never blink! This was intentional, and the effect on some viewers was duly noted.

The violence involved in the scourging, torture, and crucifixion of the Christ is a vital part of the Gospel. For me, I find it enough to know what Jesus had gone through, in detail. And even to watch a depiction, for me, is painful and heartbreaking. The last few hours of Jesus' life (as shown in the movie) might be too violent for children up to perhaps 13 of age. But I love how it was made. The sets and locations are gorgeous. The actors poured out the very essence of their skills in their performances.

It is a very entertaining movie; uplifting, and inspirational. I'm sure it will strengthen your faith.

Movie Review: "Jesus of Nazareth" a brilliant documentary
Summary: 5 Stars

Jamie X-Treme, a "Jesus of Nazareth" reviewer, and many others who are lost, will share Jamie's inept view of this exceptional reenactment of the life of Jesus Christ... the creator and savior of many. The one thing that unnerves me is the emphasis that is placed on Jesus' eyes. What difference does it make if the actor is a black man, or has blue eyes?

The accuracy of the dialogue and the message contained in it, should be of concern. I believe, like many others, that Jesus Christ is Lord, God, and creator of the universe. The first human being, flowers, insects, birds etc., had to be created by something greater than itself. Jesus Christ is the only one who claims to be soley responsible for creating all things. Allah and Buddah did not dare to make such a claim.

Jamie X-Treme! What do you believe? Who do you believe in? What GOD do you serve? It doesn't sound like you believe in any thing or anyone. I hope that you haven't made the grave mistake of only believing in your putrid self. The greatest men (except Jesus Christ) that ever lived have fallen because of their pride and self righteousness. But, I know Jamie X-Treme, your different, more intelligent and greater than all the rest.

Jamie X-Treme, I pray that one day you will come to know why you are here and how you came to be. The answer is in Jesus Christ.

Movie: Jesus of Nazareth - None better, Robert Powell - Magnificent!

Movie Review: A WONDERFUL MOVIE
Summary: 5 Stars

THIS IS THE BEST! I've seen most, if not all, of the
movies that told of our savior. The directing, the
locations, the acting...just how the movie was arranged
is WONDERFUL! About the gentleman who gave this movie
a 1 star rating, well, I suppose everybody is entitled
to his/her own opinions, and you don't have to believe
in Jesus or Christianity. BUT, Christianity is THE ONLY
TRUE religion. Everything that we have about Jesus
is primarily based on faith rather than scientific
evidence - though science can prove its history.
Remember, 12 people, including a latecomer, Paul,
wouldn't zealously given their lives and made Christianity
what it is today if there wasn't any truth to their
mission. They have been with Jesus, they've seen
what He did, heard what he had said...so there's good
ground that it's 100 % true...the other religions
that you've mentioned doesn't have much validity
since they are more akin to the pagan gods of the Romans
with which Christians tried to abolished long ago.

There is only ONE god and ONE truth and that is Jesus
and the legacy He set-forth to his followers. And so,
it is ours for the taking.

Going back to the technical side of the DVD...I say
the 1977 TV miniseries or the HISTORY CHANNEL broadcast
had better texture of film...the DVD texture is not
as rich or vibrant in color as the TV broadcasts.

A wonderful movie.
