Movie Reviews of Jesus Christ Superstar

Movie Review: A Novel Interpretation
Summary: 5 Stars

I found the director's vision and the cast's interpretation quite exciting, much more so than in the rather staid film version from 1973. Judas's betrayal of Christ in the New Testament for pieces of silver has never made much sense to me, especially in light of Judas's subsequent suicide, which suggests money was not the real object. But in THIS version, Judas's betrayal of Christ makes perfect sense. Judas is presented as a closet queen who is unable to face his homosexual attraction to Jesus, which certainly gives Judas's reprise of "I Don't Know How to Love Him" new painful meaning and explains a certain jealous animosity toward Mary Magdalene, whom he rightfully regards as a rival. Needless to say, the "kiss of Judas" is given a new interpretation here as well. When Judas realizes that his betrayal of Jesus has not rid him of his feelings, but rather, heightened them, adding an overwhelming guilt, his next step is suicide. (This basic idea was originally used by Herman Melville is his Christ-like story of "Billy Budd," but this is the first time I've seen it used in such a literal way.) And you know what? It really works!!! Bravo!

Movie Review: Finally a JCS that is not hoaky!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The first time I saw this musical was a few years ago at an outdoor theater on Montery, CA. It was a traditional interpretation of the show, and I absolutely loved it!!! I was so touched by story. I rented the 70s movie and was utterly disappointed in how hoaky it was. It was hard to get into it when they were setting it up at the beginning. It was just a bunch of hippies singing in the dessert I admit they had great voices, but boy did Judas overact.
This version was amazing!!! Almost all of the actors (Pilot kind of sucked)portrayed the characters perfectly. The Judas in this was my favorite. I don't know why so many people don't like his voice. It is a ROCK OPERA!!! He fit the bill to perfection.
Yes he could have sung the song all pretty like, but it would not have conveyed the emotion necessary for the role. If you pay attention, you can tell he has the ability to sing it like that, but he totally made the right decision to rock out!!!!
There was also incredible chemistry between Jesus and Judas (not the sexual kind) which is required for any JCS. I really felt the love, pain, and conflict. I highly reccommend this version!!!!

Movie Review: Can we say AMAZING?
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little scared to buy this DVD as Joseph... was a let down. But Gale Edwards did things with this musical that NOONE could have. She actually let you see INTO each character and how they felt and what their intentions were. When I heard that Tony Vincent was going to be Simon instead of Judas, I was a little disappointed, but Jerome Pradon did an excellent job. His voice took some getting used to, but his acting and his facial expressions were superb. Tony Vincent did an awesome job as Simon. I was not surprised as he is an excellent singer (on top of being gorgeous). Renee Castle's Mary was right on the money. She was so confused as to what was going on with her. Did she love him? Why did she love him? Should she love him? Her portrayal was right on. Caiphas was amazing (what a basso voice!!!), as was Annas. Pilate had a great operatic voice (another one to get used to). I was very impressed with the 39 lashes. What creativity Edwards has... I don't want to ruin that moment for anyone.

Basically, this DVD was a huge suprise to me as it was truly amazing. I don't say that about many things, but this is DEFINATELY deserving.

Movie Review: Forgive my ugly comment, but the new JCS is still terrific
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this via TV on the last X'mas Eve. First thought: Goodness,It should be another history lesson. But it was 200% out of my estimation. I am extremely weak about concentration on everything. I seldom saw a program without doing other things. But it was the very rare exception.

I had never seen any musicals except "Joseph" and "JCS"(both of them were on TV). I saw the former first. Even I thought is can't be better: cheerful, creative, though not quite touching, which no one supposed to be. Maybe it is not quite suitable to compare this two masterpieces because the theme , the tone are totally different. But if I can only buy one of them, I would choose JCS. Joseph is entertaining, funny, and following the original story in the bible quite well. It is a very distinctive point from JCS. The structure of JCS is from the bible, and any other things, including the underlying idea and spirit, are the smart changes and creation on their own.

I don't know how to appreciate and analyse musicals. But it is enough for you to realise one point: it shocked heavily an idiot of art.

Movie Review: Jerome Pradon is AMAZING!
Summary: 5 Stars

What caught my attention to Jesus Christ Superstar was the commercial of it on the previews of the Cats video. I then rented the film version and loved every minute of it. I then was ready to watch this version and was blown away even more than what the film had to offer. I have heard many people say Jerome Pradon was a horrible Judas but I dissagre completely. This dude has some talent, people. Do you not think we he goes off in his voice that he is just a proffesional? I liked him even more than Carl Anderson and think he needs to go and reprise this role several more times. At that very moment in the begining of "Heaven on their minds" when he goes "Jesus!" the story just begins and that's it. His "Superstar" is what made me go out and buy this DVD, 6 soundtracks and see it live twice! Of course, now I have moved on to Les Miz and Miss Saigon but I must say, just see 1 minute of "Superstar" and you will love this, and musical theare. This show and that little performance by Jerome got me to like Broadway. 'Nuff said only that if Jerome Pradon is reading this, I just got to say good job.
