Movie Review: The Killer Rocks On Summary: 4 Stars
What do all of the following have in common?
* John Fogerty,
* Merle Haggard,
* Don Henley,
* Chris Isaak,
* Norah Jones,
* Tom Jones,
* Kris Kristofferson,
* Willie Nelson,
* Ivan Neville,
* Kid Rock,
* Ron Wood
Not much, except that they're all fine musicians and they all appear on this DVD with Jerry Lee.
Initially, I questioned the decision to include Norah Jones (b. 1979) and Kid Rock (b. 1971), but it works, especially Kid Rock moving around like a gymnast on the stage to the strains of "Little Queenie", jumping up on Jerry Lee's piano at one point. Norah Jones' singing of "Crazy Arms" is as good as Sylvia Fricker's, the best I had heard prior to hearing Norah's.
Kris Kristofferson and Chris Isaak come across as being wooden, which is no surprise.
One of the better performers, who gets no credit in Amazon's reviews, is Ivan Neville, presumably a member of New Orleans's Neville Family.
Jerry Lee himself is clearly encouraging to the younger performers, and everyone seems to feel comfortable.
The program invites comparison to Roy Orbison - Black & White Night (DVD & DVD Audio), honoring Roy Orbison and recorded live in a single shooting. It's not as good as that program (which was produced by T-Bone Burnett and, among other things, used Elvis Costello as a side man and Bonnie Raitt and K.D. Lang as backup singers--both brilliant moves), but it's still good.
The only thing missing here is a cameo appearance by Jerry's cousin, Jimmy Swaggart.
Movie Review: All Killer Summary: 4 Stars
I had the pleasure of seeing Jerry Lee Lewis live this year at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Looking aged and not moving too well he was escorted to his piano. Then something great happened: as soon as he started to play the years melted away and he was the famed Killer once again.
Last Man Standing tries to show this side of Jerry Lee through a sort of tribute concert/studio recording session for his most recent Duets album.
The concert portion filmed in LA on September 29, 2006 has Mr.Lewis rocking with a group of admirers who all seemed awed to be in his presence. There are legendary performances from Tom Jones, Soloman Burke, Norah Jones and others. The band cooks but is a little guitar heavy at times with Ronnie Wood taking his Stone on Loan persona on the road.
The studio portion of the disc features performances by John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, and Merle Haggard.
This is a disc to see if you are a fan of legendary rock and roll.
