Movie Reviews of Jerry Garcia Band: Live at ShorelineMovie Review: Nice souvenir Summary: 4 Stars
Nice to have a pro shot JGB video out there. Video quality is excellent, audio is pretty good (could use a little more low mids). The descriptions make it sound like this was the first JGB show after Brent's death. This is not the case. Brent passed on 7/26/90, and the JGB actually played the Greek in Berkeley on 8/5, with shows at the Warfield 8/7 through 8/9. Regardless, this is an excellent DVD and well worth purchasing. Compare Jerry's face in this one to View From the Vault I shot on 7/8/90. You can almost see the pain Brent's death caused him. It was the beginning of a long slow slide for Captain Trips. Rest in peace Jerry.
Movie Review: Miss this old friend Summary: 3 Stars
I first saw the Dead in '69 at the Fillmore West and I was at the last two shows. I think Jerry was the greatest guitarist I have ever heard, not necessarily technique or speed, but the emotion in every note. The '89-'90 version of the Jerry Garcia Band was my favorite. It's nice to see him, them, again and the video of this DVD is excellent. The playing is not as inspired as the CD from the same time period, but still very enjoyable. The sound is terrible. The mix is awful. I rate it three stars because it's Jerry, and as a memory it's nice, but under any other circumstances, the sound is so bad it's one star.
Movie Review: Not Great Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this DVD mistakenly expecting some great acoustic work by the JGB. It is all electric-renditions and not up to the quality I expected. There are perhaps 3 great songs, 3 average, and 4 or 5 poor covers of Motown Oldies. Tangled Up In Blue is great but simply because it's such a great Dylan song. I have a 5.1 surround sound system and the audio isn't nearly as good as a "Dead" DVD in 5.1, but it's acceptable.
I'll give it 3 stars becasue I'm feeling generous today. You really need to be a Dead-Head to love this DVD.
Movie Review: Great music but the video is dated. Summary: 3 Stars
Incredible music from the Garcia Band - heart felt and pure. Some good shots of Jerry's guitar work but in the end the video is second rate. So few camera angles they quickly become familiar. You're left hoping Jerry would step forward to get the mic stand out of the picture. Cheesy psychodelic graphics don't help at all but instead make it appear much older than it should. My advice? Play it for the music but no need to watch the video.
Movie Review: boring? Summary: 3 Stars
this 2 and1/2 hour video is just too boring.
yes of course jerry is at his best, but then just buy the cd.
not one shot of the crowd or surroundings the whole time.
the film quality is average at best. the volume level of the recording also seems to be low. i can't believe the people at jerry garcia can't do a better job than this!!
