Movie Review: Excellent movie but not for the weak-kneed
Summary: 4 Stars

First, a caveat: I'm evidently sensitive, or maybe not as numbed to violence and gore as most American movie fans. Until now, in my late 40s, I avoided violent or scary movies. Having said that, "Jeremiah Johnson" is an excellent movie, but it's on the borderline of what I can tolerate. I recommend it with reservations because of the graphic violence and depressing ending.

The story seems more authentic than most John Wayne types, yet it's also mixed with elements of American folktales a la Davey Crockett. The acting is superb, the scenery beautiful - apparently Colorado and Utah, mostly - and there are even some moments of humor to save this from being a complete downer. But the story is pretty dismaying in the conclusion.

Jeremiah is basically a really good guy who seeks his fortune as a mountain trapper, as far away from civilization as possible. A legendary white trapper who froze to death bequeaths his 50-gauge shotgun to him, which saves Jeremiah from near-starvation. Another old trapper takes him under his wing and gives him wisdom (as well as food) for life. Jeremiah then rescues an orphan boy suffering from trauma after an Indian massacre. The boy's mother is left insane after experiencing horrors left to our imagination. Jeremiah then saves the life of another legendary-type white man who seems almost crazy and reckless but actually understands Natives (Indians) extremely well. But he gets J in a mess with the local Flatheads and J ends up having to marry a Native girl to save his own life. Eventually, he learns to love her and they make a happy life with the adopted orphan, and all seems to be turning out OK...until the end. I won't go into details, but brace yourselves.

I recommend this if you like Westerns, esp. with more authentic dialogue and nice scenery, and aren't bothered too much by some violence and real tragedy.
