Movie Reviews of Jeremiah JohnsonMovie Review: On my husband's list of classics... Summary: 5 Stars
This was a gift for my husband when he got his new DVD. He has a list of classic movies that seems to be imprinted on the minds of all members of the male species. I can name several movies that all men absolutely have to sit down and watch if it comes on...this is one of them, along with most Clint Eastwood movies, Monty Python movies, the Three Stooges, and Steve McQueen in 'Bullitt'. There...have I got all of them guys? I enjoy watching these older movies on DVDs because first, as a deaf person...most of these were not captioned way-back-when. SEcond, the sound and color and picture quality on DVDs is significantly better than on videos. But unlike the guys, seeing a movie once, is good enough for me. I'd rather read a book. However, this is one of Robert Redford's best movies. The scenery is gorgeous and is familiar from Utah and Sundance (Redford's property in Provo Canyon). Definitely a worth-while purchase... Movie Review: Jeremiah Johnson Summary: 5 Stars
Rarely is there a movie that I can watch repeatedly. Jeremiah Johnson is one of those. The story line, acting, scenes, pacing and soundtrack are all something to behold. Anyone that ever gets fed up with the so called "modern world", and wishes they could revert to a simpiler existence will love the idea of retreating into the mountains and sustaining ones own existence through total determination and fortitude that this move invokes. Despite the fact that the modern world in this case is based in the mid nineteenth century, the need to leave it behind still rings true. Ultimately that modern world still manages to find it's way into Johnson's life, leaving heartache in it's wake for Johnson to deal with. Dealing with it brings out Redfords performance and insures Jeremiah Johnson's place at the top of any Hollywood Hall of Fame list. Not to be missed. Never met a single person in my life that didn't like it. Enjoy.
Movie Review: Redford the outdoorsman Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is a great glimpse back at the 19th century and the pioneers who first settled the far-western states. Filmed in Utah, the scenery is breath-taking (I now understand why Robert Redford loves that state so much).
Jeremiah Johnson is a self-made frontier-man who sets about to live his life in the seclusion of the mountains. Along the way he has to deal with Indians (sometimes friendly, sometimes not), the elements (living in MI, I can't fathom someone spending the whole winter outdoors!) and wild animals. On top of all that he needs to fend for himself and get everything he needs to survive.
For outdoorsmen, this movie is a must-have. For the rest of us (like me!) it is an enjoyable venture into a different age & time. It centers around the interaction of the white man with the native American, and sometimes the results were tragically disastrous.
Movie Review: Redford's Jeremiah Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't sure I'd like the movie. Redford himself has been hit or miss with me, and I was afraid he'd be too pretty for the part, but he works his way into it and finally plays the character well. His fellow actors bring a lot for him to work off of as well. The movie brings a kind of architypical story to life with lots of little details that lend authenticity. The French speaking Flathead chief and his daughter (Jeremiah's later wife) play with real understated grandeur. There are humourous moments balancing out the harshness. The boy without saying a word the whole movie speaks volumes. Great picture. See it. It's worth having as well, especially for the price. They don't make movies like this anymore. A 1972 gem.
Movie Review: Back in the day. . . Summary: 5 Stars
I'm an English teacher, trying to introduce American Literature in a friendly way to a media-sabotaged generation who think movies must say and tell all, leaving nothing to the imagination. Here is a movie made when movies were movies, made with care and accuracy, multi-thematically rich: man vs. nature, inter-racial marriage, and outcasts combining perfectly into a believable family. Redford is incredible, his 'squaw' is every bit his equal in portraying innocence and youth forced into a marriage she didn't choose, and 'Caleb' says everything without saying a single word. How did they do this? Done in a day when movies were magic and sheer talent filled the screen. Where has all the magic gone, long time passing. . .
