Movie Reviews of Jeremiah JohnsonMovie Review: Compelling story line. Great scenery Summary: 5 Stars
If you ever harbored fantasies of running off to the mountains to live a simpler life, this is your movie. The story is compelling - a veteran of a war in the mid 1800s (we never know which one) heads to the Rocky Mountains to separate himself from the troubles of society. He finds that separation is not possible, but the story line takes interesting deviations (with other mountain men, indians, and the first settlers in the region.FABULOUS scenery of the high country of the Rockies in both warm and cold weather, and wonderful music (accoustic guitar and indian flute). You know how there are two kinds of people in the world (for recreational purposes): mountain people and beach people? Well, if you are a "mountain people", this is a great movie for you. A word of warning: It is kind of long - although well worth it. If you are not really into it, you might want to watch it over two nights. I seldom watch any movie twice, and I watch this one at least twice a year.
Movie Review: "Skin that'n Pilgrim!" Summary: 5 Stars
A defining film for everyone to enjoy that fairly captures the hardships of pioneers in the mid 1800's. Just an incredible experience worth watching again and again. Never could figure out why Del Bolton disappeared after this movie. She is absolutely stunning but I really didn't notice myself until after I'd seen the movie for about the tenth time. Clearly the highlight of Redford's career and he is very credible as he eagerly learns the survival lessons of a mountainman from Will Geer, who obviously had fun with this part. Redford's metamorphosis as he moves from the hunter to the hunted is just amazing and the scene with Geer at the end of the film is one of the most poignant in movie history. Can't understand why they made Redford enunciate his words so clearly like nobody else around spoke English? The DVD transfer is outstanding and the sountrack is one of the best Hollywood ever produced. It moves perfectly with the pace and tone of the film. Timeless with few faults. 5 Bear Claws.
Movie Review: For many, this movie was a "life altering" experience. Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was loosely based upon the great book "Mountain Man" by Vardis Fisher. You should read the book and then watch the movie. I have probably watched this movie 30 times or more over the years. I own three copies of the video and a copy of the DVD. Redford was pretty good in the movie, but Will Geer (Chris Lapp), Delle Bolton (Swan), and especially the great Stefan Gerasch (Del Gue!) were downright incredible. When you've seen this movie and it strikes you like a bolt from the blue that you want to hunt bear with a ".50 caliber Hawken", find me somehow and I will show you what to do. Better, if you are willing to take your life in your hands, maybe you can come. Incidentally, the technical direction could have been better. The gun "Jeremiah" says he would "settle for" is ridiculously inappropriate and even the .50 is inadequate for what he needed to do. Buy this DVD. It is best watched on a cold winter's night, alone.
Movie Review: Just gets better with age Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie at the theater with my parents when I was 5 in Colorado. We drove to Colorado Springs to see it, and in retrospect I can't believe they let me see this film at that age. It left a lasting impression of what determination can do for the human spirit and I've used this example many times in daily life. OK, so you might think I'm reading too much into this movie, but even for just the film-going factor this movie's worth it! There are none of the silly special effects of the matrix just the real deal struggles of man vs. the elements and the Crow Indians. As years have gone by, the movie is still entertaining to watch and a real eye opener about how far our modern day lifestyles have come. Next time you're hungry, think about how you're going to feed yourself. Will it involve a rifle, a rabbit, a bowie knife and a spit? Probably not. There are many elements to this film, man vs. nature, man vs. man, man vs. himself, it's good stuff...
Movie Review: A musket in the hands of a frozen corpse Summary: 5 Stars
As truly american films go, there is always a hero which blazes the trail of the unknown. Robert Redford plays a man sick and tired of city life and (much like Dances With Wolves) finds himself alone in a ravaging frontier. He meets wild men in winter with skins on their back's, wild men in summer that have shaved their heads to keep their scalp, and a crazy woman that has lost all she has and taken upon with pitty. As humorous in stuggle as it is heartbreaking, Jeremiah Johnson stands tall with cinema's American Heroes. It can be listed with the "Lone Man" movies such as Rob Roy, Brave Heart, Dances With Wolves, and Last of the Mohican's. If you appreciate these mentioned films then you will most definately enjoy it. When he looses everything, and fight's alone against Braves one at a time, you will cheer his strength, and laugh at his attempts. Jeremiah Johnson starts as a person not befitting a meal for a Griz, but in the end becomes a legend.
