Movie Reviews of Jeffrey

Movie Review: Cute, But Doesn't Take Itself Seriously Enough
Summary: 3 Stars

The film is very obviously based upon a stage play. Many of the theatrical moments remain: characters speak directly to the camera; the action literally freezes so a character can vocalize their internal thoughts and emotions; the camera cuts away to show the audience reaction. But these scenes are also the movie's flaws.

By breaking the flow of the story with these theatrical interludes and chapter title pages, it becomes almost impossible to really relate emotionally to the characters. Jeffrey's quest to avoid intimacy because of his fear of falling in love with someone who is going to die (aren't we all going to die though?) comes across as a series of Jeffrey-Learns-an-Important-Lesson vignettes, punctuated by a cameo celebrity appearance.

Never does the story take a hard and serious look at the lives of gay men, let alone gay men living in the age of HIV/AIDS. Several moments are funny (and Patrick Stewart is wonderful) but it never seems to take off as a total package. Even though the movie is a comedy, the story needs to be believable, and I never once thought Jeffrey believed his own neurosis.

Movie Review: A so-so film that could be better
Summary: 3 Stars

Steven Weber gives a great performance in "Jeffrey", especially for a supposed straight man playing the part of a gay man. There were a few good moments, but for the most part I felt the plot was not real good. It's down there on my list with "The Boys in the Band", but not quite that low on the list. I give it three stars for the casting, acting and video/sound quality. That's about the best I can do on this one. I watched with anticipation, waiting for something to break loose and go somewhere. It just never did for me. They were on the right track, and could have made this into a first rate film, but failed miserably. It's ok, not a really bad movie, just not at all a really good one either. It's worth a watch if you have nothing better to do, but keep expectations low as not to be terribly disappointed.

Movie Review: Jeffrey Seems Dated
Summary: 3 Stars

I saw this flick originally when it came out. I watched it again on DVD (rental), and was disappointed. Weber, though appealing, seems awfully whiney. I realize his character's indecision about life is what drives the story- but it also drove this viewer crazy. Writer Paul Rudnick has some great lines and there are some good performances- but this film often feels strained. A somewhat enjoyable film, but it could've been better.

Movie Review: Jeffrey - ignorance must be bliss?
Summary: 2 Stars

Not funny, though it has moments (about three at my last count). The characters are pitiable in their ignorance; and our "hero" doesn't seem to learn a ... thing from his consistently bad decisions. To think, even within the context of the time frame of when the film was made, that an [alternative lifestyle] man was in his mid-twenties living in an urban area was so mis-informed or, sadly, un-informed about AIDS, his desires, and his denial is absolutely ludicrous. It could have been charming. It could have been poignant. It could have been many things, but disappointing, ignorant and pathetic are the only adjectives that come to mind. These aspects, even in context of when the film was made, were irresponsible and a true disservice to the [alternative lifestyle] community as a whole. ...
