Movie Reviews of Jeffrey

Movie Review: "A Cute Adult Gay Romantic Comedy"
Summary: 5 Stars

"Jeffrey" has always been one of my favorite romantic gay comedy/dramas. Its story is simple: it's about a man in his early thirties who decides to stay celibate because of the AIDS crisis. However, things change for him when he falls in love with a stud at a gym. Things are going great until the gum gym guy tells him that he is HIV positive. The movie is really about how two different gay men with different HIV statuses can have a healthy, normal life together. "Jeffrey" is widely considered the first movie to explore how an HIV positive man can have a beautiful relationship with an HIV negative man. The script is strong and the performances are flawless. Patrick Stewart also plays an older gay man whose lover dies of AIDS. A truely touching story of romance, fun, and undying friendship. Steven Weber, from TV's "Wings" and Michael T. Weiss from "Days of Our Lives" play the leads in the film. The DVD is a barebones edition, but it comes in widescreen and the trailer is included. Sigourney Weaver has a cameo as a mouthy public speaker. Enjoy.

Movie Review: STANDS THE TEST OF TIME
Summary: 5 Stars

It has been fifteen years since "Jeffrey" was released. I just added it to my collection and found that it stands the test of time. Witty, smart, and entertaining and still a refreshing look at the conundrum that faces so many today of sex and romance in the age of AIDS.
The performances are all winning. With standouts by Patrick Stewart as a bitchy cutting designing older queen and Brian Batt (Mad Men's resident closeted gay) as his "Cats" loving lover. There are wonderful cameos by Sigourney Weaver, Kathy Najimy, Olympia Dukakis, Victor Garber, Camryn Manheim, just to name a few.
The real heart of the story is where to look for the finest performances. Steven Weber as Jeffery and Michael T. Weis as Steve the man who challenges Jeffery's decision on how to get by in without love are so fresh and believable. They are a joy to watch and lovely to look at as well.
"Jeffery" delivers plenty of laughs and some tears along the way. A wonderful play that translates well to the screen.

Movie Review: Jeffrey (1995)
Summary: 5 Stars

Jeffrey was probably the first gay themed movie I saw in a theatre, all the other movies I had previously seen only in video tape at home. I actually think to have seen it two times and liked both time. It was also one of the first movie I bought in videotape and probably in my old videotape boxes there is still my copy.

Thinking at that movie in these days, I realized how much my perspective is changed: I loved Jeffrey, but had always the idea that it was a sad movie; one of the character has AIDS and almost 15 years ago, at least in Italy, having AIDS was the same as having a terminal illness there was no chance to survive. So, I always thought that Jeffrey couldn't be in any way an Happily Ever After. Now 15 years later, knowing that there are people who live healthy with AIDS, my perspective is changed: Jeffrey is definitely an Happily Ever After romance.

Strongly reccomended.

Movie Review: Great movie - Very Funny and Romantic too!
Summary: 5 Stars

I laughed at some of the negative reviews posted on here for this movie. This is a Paul Rudnik movie - He wrote "In & Out" "Adams Family Values" etc - this is not supposed to be "Longtime Companion" kids!

He tackles these topics from a "Neil Simon" point of view. Meaning wisecracks leading to the serious subjects. This is a COMEDY first and second tackles the issues of intimacy in the age of AIDS.

The performances are wonderful. Especially Patrick Stewart who should have been nominated for an Oscar. Steven Weber is adorable and Michal T Weiss is so hot he almost melts the film.

I highly recommend this very funny movie with a point. Plus I like romantic movies about ADULT gay men. You hardly see them. It's always a coming out story about young boys. That was done in an excellent way with 'beautiful thing' but move on gay filmmakers. Adult men deserve their love stories too.

Movie Review: Here's a hetro woman's feelings on this film
Summary: 5 Stars

About 19 years ago I read this play called "Jeffery". It was such a departure from all the other gay/AIDS related plays I had seen or read, I wanted to see it live and not on the page. I never got to see it preformed, and was so tickled when I discovered it on dvd!
To me it was not only well acted, but covered a lot of stuff that scared all of us dating, not just gay folks, but EVERYONE concerned about losing ourselves, and our loved ones.
Jeffery isn't just scared of dying, but of losing someone he loves, so if he doesn't love anyone, his is safe....got to tell you folks that isn't just a gay issue.
All three leads in this film brought a lot of warmth and humor to the text. I am so glad I bought a copy of this movie! I plan on watching it again tonight.
