Movie Reviews of Jazz : A Film By Ken BurnsMovie Review: Definitive Jazz Documentary Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful documentary series, unfortunately edited down for British TV (if you want the full series then purchase the 10-disc set in NTSC format). The series is absorbing from disc 1 and I thought I knew a fair bit about jazz until I started watching this. The social context is extraordinary and we are given an insight into a range of jazz masters. The importance of Louis Armstrong forms a vital string from beginning to end, but we are given the life stories of a good number of influential jazz performers and arrangers, particularly Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Sidney Bechet, and many others. The interviews that make up the narrative are superb, Wynton Marsalis in particular, who talks and plays with real authority. I can't praise this series highly enough - an essential purchase for anyone who is interested in music generally, and in jazz in particular. There is also a companion CD box set that can be purchased - excellent for anyone who wants to dip into jazz through the decades.
Movie Review: Ken Burns Jazz - Brilliant! Summary: 5 Stars
This is quite simply, the best documentary series I have ever seen, on any topic.
Each episode is filled with wonderful still photographs, rare archival footage, as well as current interviews and performances that make for a very entertaining experience. Visual transitions and the chapter / episode flow are pleasing and logical. Did I mention the music? If you like Jazz music, you will be endlessly entertained by the score of this film.
Narration by Keith David is top-notch, and very engaging.
Even if you're not a huge jazz fan (or not a huge fan of documentary films) you will likely enjoy at least some of this set.
If you're a jazz fan who likes documentaries (like me) this collection is a MUST.
Movie Review: Great Series, Very Educational Summary: 5 Stars
I am a music teacher and have been sharing this series over the last few months with some of my young players and I think it is absolutely fantastic!!!! I think that the commentary by such luminaries as Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Albert Murray,Margo Jeferson (the list is endless)is just amazing. Many first person accounts and you really can't ask for better than that . I guess I should also add Artie Shaw, just brilliant!!!
I would highly recommend this for anyone who is an instructor of any musical instrument, even voice. It shows young people that jazz truely is (to quote Rolling Stone Magazine)"The Blues With Wings."

Movie Review: The Greatest Knowledge in Jazz Summary: 5 Stars
We are so proud to own these DVDs. We have been long time lovers a Jazz. The best is here for the younger generations to learn appreciation for good music. I personally am a gospel musician and love gospel, jazz and the oldies and goodies. This is true music.
