Movie Reviews of Jawbreaker

Movie Review: Everything is peachy keen..
Summary: 5 Stars

In the same vein as Heathers, Jawbreaker is a darkly humorous high-school tale of 4 best girlfriends who "kidnap" their friend Liz Purr on her birthday gagging her with a Jawbreaker, and accidentally killing her. The three girls freak out, then Courtney, drives them to school and makes the decision for all of them that they are not going to tell anyone, and call in sick for Liz pretending to be her mother. Since Courtney is the leader of the group, she is the one making all the calls. They return Liz to her house after school and put her back in her bed. But Fern Mayo shows up unexpectedly with Liz's homework and see's her dead body on the bed. She is then interrogated by Courtney, and convinced by her with bribery that if she keeps the secret she will make her beautiful, popular, loved and feared. So, Fern is now transformed into Vylette, Courtney's "creation", and Julie is kicked out of the group because she doesn't want anything to do with it, but is too scared to tell because Courtney threatens her reputation, and sais that she'll tell Detective Cruz that they all saw her do it. We then progress as Liz's body is discovered, Fern becomes more and more like Courtney, and Julie sits by and remains helplessly desperate in her own sorrow. So she finally musters up enough courage by the time that Courtney and Marcy ruin Fern's reputation and everyone knows that shes really a "loser". With Fern and Zack on her side she tries to tell the Detective but Courtney has already sealed the evidence by having had sex with a random stranger on Liz's bed before the police found her, telling the Detective she wasn't a virgin, and that she liked strange men. So Dectective Cruz doesn't think Julie knows what she's talking about and Julie is given some of Liz's old things and find a recording on a card of Courtney admitting that she killed Liz and plays it over the speakers at the prom.

Movie Review: Similar story to Mean Girls
Summary: 5 Stars

When three popular girls in high school (Courtney, Marcy and Julie) kidnap their best friend Elizabeth Purr on her birthday (as an innocent and friendly prank), they accidentally kill her by gagging her with a jawbreaker. Stunned, the three still went to school that day and pretend nothing is wrong. After school, they carry her corpse to her house and make it seem like she was raped. When Fern, the school nerd goes to Liz's house to drop off her homework, she finds Elizabeth dead in her bed. To make Fern not tell (and to save Courtney's reputation from going down the drain), Courtney makes Fern "one of them", flawless and beautiful, and uses her to replace Liz.

Vylette (Fern's new name given to by Courtney) goes day by day "beneath the stars" so to speak. Fern was inspired by Elizabeth and wanted to be just like her, beautiful and popular. One day, her parade was rained on when she did something to make Courtney and Marcy look bad, so Courtney took away Fern's popularity. Her fifteen minutes of fame were up.

Since Courtney refused to tell the truth about Elizabeth's death, Julie decides to take matters into her own hands and find out a way to tell everyone. One night, as Julie is going through some of Elizabeth's stuff, she comes across a voice greeting card. Julie opened it and the card said, "I killed Liz, I killed the teen dream, deal with it!" The card was of a previous prank. Earlier in the movie, when Courtney, Marcy and Julie were at Elizabeth's house, Courtney accidentally rerecorded the message on the card. On prom night, Courtney gets picked as prom queen. In the middle of her speech, Julie's friend rewired the speakers, so that when Courtney paused, the whole school heard the message repeatedly: "I killed Liz, I killed the teen dream, deal with it!"

Movie Review: Carrie Meets The Heathers
Summary: 5 Stars

I was totally impressed by this movie. It is amazing. It has been 7 years since I graduated and I can honestly say that Darien Stein captured the horrors of the high school higharcy. Rose McGowan portrays the character Courtney as if she was born to play it. The Marylyn Mansion cameo is so awesome. It reminds me of the heathers mixed up with Carrie. Rebecca Gayheart just knows how to do the whole sweet innocent girl act. If there is any version to own it is definitely the DVD. The Commentary by Stein is so fantastic it really adds to the enjoyment of this feature. I watched the director's commentary with the subtitles so I could follow what was going on while listening to how the picture was brought into being. After viewing the movie and myself picking up some of the visual imagery it was fantastic to see how the director intended it to be that way. The whole creation of the Jawbreaker in the beginning and How Stein intended the visual imagery that was definitely apparent; shows that at least someone in Hollywood is tying to give us value for a seven Dollar movie and especially a home video. The only purpose to purchase the video is to view the movie at home as many times as you like; at you're own time so you can catch all the things you missed the first time, but do not wish to pay 7$ a pop to see it at the theater some 10 times. The purpose of owning a DVD of the video is to have more features than VHS can give. Such as Special Features, Subtitles, the Original Trailer that attracted you're attention when you viewed the movie, as well as great picture quality. "Tri-Star" delivers all this and more with "JAWBREAKER" My only gripe is I wish they had put the Girls theme song YOOHOO video in the special features.

Movie Review: Peachy Keen
Summary: 5 Stars

I was watching the TV guide when I saw 'Jawbreaker'. I had no earthly idea what it was about I would not even have payed it mind, but I saw Rose McGowan's name so I thought I'd take a look. What a good movie. Rose plays Cortney Shane the Queen her who along with Marcie her loyal servant and the popular good-girls Julie and Liz rule Reagen High School. On Liz's 17th birthday the other three girls plan a prank where they pretend to kidnap Liz. Cortney puts a jawbreaker in her mouth then they tape it shut and stuff her in the trunk of Courtnay's car. When they get out to Lz only to find her dead. They drive to school with Liz's body in the trunk. Courtnay tells them to act like everything is peachy keen. That night they put Liz's body in her bed and act like she was raped, but when school outcast Fern shows up Courtnay makes a deal will make you one of us if you don't tell. Fern becomes Vylette the new most popular girl in school and Julie becomes a nobody. The rest of the story comes for Vylette rising to the top, Cortney doing what ever it takes to keep her Kingdom and Julie trying to figure out how to pen Cortney for the murder.
Rose McGowan is great. Being the evil girl on top was truly her calling. The girls who played Julie and Fern where good too I don't know there names but they are good actress.
The movie was most of all a comedy a really good line was on prom night when Julies boyfriend was driving her and Fern home after Cortney said that she would not get in trouble for killing Liz he said "lets go to the prom" and Fern responds "first lets stop by the slatterhouse and get a bucket of pigs blood". I also like Cortney's photsify on life " Life's a bitch and then you die".
Strongly suggested.

Movie Review: "Learn it, Live it, Love it!"
Summary: 5 Stars

What are three beautiful teen queens to do when they accidentily kill their best friend (by choking her with a JAWBREAKER) as a birthday prank? Well what they end up doing will be having you question how much your friends actually care about you.

Rose McGowan has an uncanny knack for playing evil parts. Her role as "satan in heels" Courtney is very entertaining. Julie Benz cracked me up with her portrayal of the dumb blonde Marcy Fox, or "Foxy" for short. Rebecca Gayheart is the goody-goody (believe me she fits the stereotype) Julie who beleives in doing everything right! Other than getting a little old in the middle, this movie certainly delievers. Again, believe me the plot gets a little repetitve but the dialouge makes up for it big time!

There are some details that if you haven't seen the movie (what's wrong with you?)that shouldn't be revealed, so I'll just keep them to myself. All in all this movie was great and I really appricated it. One last note, if you're looking to laugh you won't find many here (why, think of the classic "Heathers" it's like that). If you're looking for an entertaing film with a good plot, this is for you!! I enjoyed it and i hope you do too!
