Movie Reviews of Jason and the Argonauts

Movie Review: Classic Greek Mythological Adventure
Summary: 5 Stars

Watching 'Jason and the Argonauts' brings childhood memories flooding back. I recall being wide eyed and mesmerised by this movie way back when I was a kid. Astonishingly I still enjoy this movie, and marvel at its atmospheric qualities. This really is one movie which showcases technical achievement. Given the fact that this was made in 1963, it is technically brilliant. In my opinion the skeleton battle scene is one of the all time great animated action scenes of its type. Sure, it has been eclipsed many times since, and looks tacky now, but when considered in context with its year of production, it rates up there with "2001 A Space Odyssey " as a movie ahead of its time. Greek mythology, coupled with dated, but fun animation, this is a classic movie deserving of a place in my DVD collection. Its a tribute to movie makers of old.

Movie Review: The Gods Must Be Crazy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, Zeus and Hera are at it again, playing games with humanity like we're so many chess pieces. This time they pick on Jason, sending him to the ends of the earth in search of the legendary Golden Fleece. Jason must attain a ship, assemble a crew, and journey through the most dangerous adventure of his life, just to make the gods chuckle! Watch as Jason and his argonauts battle the skyscraper-sized Telos! See them defeat the horrid harpies! Thrill to Jason's duel with the seven-headed hydra! Then, just when you think there cannot possibly be more, Jason and his mates are plagued by an army of sword-swinging skeletons! I hope those deities are happy with themselves! Oh well, at least Jason gets the beautiful babe at the end. JATA is one of Ray Harryhausen's greatest achievements. Watch it for yourself. Highly recommended...

Movie Review: Best film version of a classic Greek myth
Summary: 5 Stars

Taking a break from his usual Sinbad movies, Ray Harryhausen created a wonderful version of the Jason and the Golden Fleece myth in this great film. The film holds your sense of wonder, while being basically true to the original story. Todd Armstrong is a solid hero as Jason, while Nigel Green probably creates one of the more believable Hercules performances on film. Nancy Kovack is an alluring Medea, and Honor Blackman adds a touch of class to the whole proceeding as Hera, queen of the gods. This film moves at a good clip and provides much to enjoy, especially the scenes with the bronze giant, Talos, and the final battle with the skeleton army. If you're looking for a great introduction to the world of Greek mythology, you can't do better than to see this masterpiece. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: An Ashtonishing Achievement!
Summary: 5 Stars

Everyone will tell you about the special effects in this movie, made decades ago. And it's true that we have yet to see their equal, even in this age of computer animation and hundreds of million dollar budgets. Find me any movie special effects that even rival Talus, or the skeleton fight scene....you can't. But there is so much more here than special effects. The character of Hercules has never been portrayed with more ambiguity and depth. The relationship between the Gods and men is explored in a shockingly interesting way for an "action pic." Gadzooks! This is an intelligent and interesting film! This film towers over other monster pics the way "High Noon" towers over other westerns.

Movie Review: Nothing not to like!
Summary: 5 Stars

Let's be real: you don't watch a film like this for the acting. That's just a vehicle to get to the action. Nobody in this film will ever be mistaken for Meryl Streep or Marlon Brando; that's for sure. The real star of the original Jason is, naturally, Harryhausen's special effects, which still, even in these days of CGI, manage to capture your attention and perhaps even give you a tiny chill or two. Just suspend belief, get into the film and you'll find it's over way too quickly, and that the effects managed to enthrall you whether you were trying to resist or not.
An absolute must-own. If you've never seen this, you're in for a hell of a treat! [...]
