Movie Reviews of Jason and the Argonauts

Movie Review: greatest film from a special fx master
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this film. I first saw it when I was twelve and I've loved it ever since. Especially after seeing this wonderful film butchered for television viewing, I couldn't wait to get the DVD. This is a fairly faithful adaptation of the myth; the script is well-written and the cast does a great job -- this has got to be the best Hercules (Nigel Green) in any classical movie.

The wonderful music is by Bernard Herrman (Fahrenheit 451, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Vertigo), and the effects by Harryhausen are superb, maybe his best. I'll never forget the first time I saw the giant bronze Talos turn his head and step down from his pedestal. Seeing the harpies come to life, and the seven-headed Hydra, the skeletons, Triton, the gods on Mount Olympus .... too many great effects to list!

The DVD version is worthwhile. The picture quality here is very good and the sound quality average. Special DVD features include English, French or Spanish language and subtitles; a great 12 minute discussion between John Landis and Ray Harryhausen (1995); a 1963 trailer.

Movie Review: STILL A LOT OF FUN
Summary: 5 Stars

Having seen this wonderful movie when it was first released, I was wondering how I'd feel about it 40 years later. JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is probably the best of the many movies Ray Harryhausen created the stop motion effects. From the giant Talos to the horrible harpies; the dreaded Hydra and of course, the skeleton soldiers, these effects are amazing, especially considering that Harryhausen did them all by himself. Director Don Chaffey almost sabotages his film with the overly long and unnecessary dance sequence with Nancy Kovack and sometimes even the special effects sequences are a little drawn out (especially the clashing rocks thing), but overall JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is still a classy, mesmerizing and enjoyable mythological journey. Todd Armstrong does well as Jason, and there's a lot of Britain's finest character actors in supporting roles: Laurence Naismith, Nigel Green, Honor Blackman, Michael Gwynne and Nial McGinniss to name a few. It's fun and in this CGI unundated world of ours, these amazing creations stand the test of time.

Movie Review: Fun and exciting!
Summary: 5 Stars

When King Pelias seeks to overthrow a prophecy by killing the children of Aristo, he finds that he has set himself a new doom. So, to avoid dying at the hand of Aristo's son Jason, he sends him on a quest to obtain a magical golden fleece. But, with the gods' help, and the assistance of some of the greatest heroes in Greece, he will overcome terrible monsters and deadly traps to win through...and win love.

This is an excellent movie. It must have been a fantastic movie when it first came out in 1963, because it is still so much fun to watch. I like the monsters, including the fight with the skeletons - a scene that is still thrilling to watch all these years later, as is the scene with Talos! Also, I must say that I am impressed with all of the stars here - Nigel Green, Patrick Troughton, Honor Blackman, and others.

Yeah, this is a great movie, one that I really enjoyed, as did my fifteen-year-old son. We highly recommend this fun and exciting movie!

Movie Review: Before Clash of the Titans there was the Golden Fleece
Summary: 5 Stars

If you love Clash of the Titans then you will want to see Jason and the Argonauts to witness how stop motion animation would shape Hollywood special effects for decades to come. Not only that, but the Golden Fleece story is a pretty decent mythological narrative to bring to the silver screen and this is a full on Hollywood blockbuster production.

Jason and the Argonauts is great screenwriting along with a character driven story, many of whom are the Gods of Olympus, presiding over Jason who goes on a journey to recover the Golden Fleece to restore his nation's confidence. There are lots of goodies here, from moving metal statues, giant lizards and hydras to the superb skeleton warrior finale that blew everybody away when it was first shown. There are some nice surprise twists and turns in store. You will watch this time and time again. Great entertainment through and through and a triumph for special effects.

Movie Review: Holds up pretty well...!!
Summary: 5 Stars

"Jason And The Argonauts"
(Columbia Pictures, 1963)
One of the great films of the Ray Harryhausen stop-motion animation canon, 1963's "Jason And The Argonauts" holds up remarkably well over the years. It's a fine version of the ancient Greek myth of Jason and Medea, with a strong, straightforward script, cool costumes and special effects that were remarkable for their time and remain both charming and edifying for open-minded modern viewers. The acting is pretty stiff, but that's okay: this film works as both camp and fantasy, and the corny acting is definitely part of the fun. The monsters look groovy and are generally okay for all but the youngest children. I hadn't seen this one in years and years and was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it still is: definitely a cut above most of the other sword-and-sandals epics of the same era. (Axton)
