Movie Reviews of Jane Eyre

Movie Review: BROODING EDWARD YEARNS FOR JANE, WHO IS SO GENTLE AND CARING!
Summary: 5 Stars

This love story has become a classic legend! I am a true Jane Eyre fan, and I love this old black and white version, of this very old and special love story! This movie gives you a shorter and darker version of Jane Eyre, but I still loved it! I loved( Orson Welles) as Mr. Rochester, he was tall and handsome and brooding, and he was a very intense, and striking Edward Rochester! He had a nice deep voice! I also loved the beautiful( Joan Fontaine) as Jane Eyre, I thought her and Orson Welles, looked like a perfect couple together! I was also pleased with my DVD, it had a very clear picture!

In the movie Mr. Rochester's home, and the outside scenery was dark, and it did not stand out, and but I liked it anyway! It all reminded me of a dark, spooky, haunted house! I heard that( Robert Stevenson )the director of the movie, may have chosen to keep Rochester's home and the grounds, and the movie itself dark and brooding, because when this movie was being made, the worst part of WWII, was going on.

This movie is about a poor orphaned, little girl named Jane Eyre, who was sent to a school for orphan's, and all her young life, she has been picked on, and mistreated, and made to feel unwanted, and unloved! I loved the little girl who played Jane Eyre, and I was also pleasantly surprised, to see (Elizabeth Taylor) as the little girl who played Helen, Jane's friend at school.

Jane grows up in this orphan school, and she becomes a young woman and wants a new life, so she advertises, and becomes a governess, to a little girl at Mr. Edward Rochester's estate. The housekeeper of Mr. Rochester's estate, says that Mr. Rochester is hardly ever at home, and stays gone for long periods of time. But when Edward meets Jane all that changes, and later Jane even, saves Edward's life from a fire, and a bond is formed between them, and they fall in love! Edward loves Jane so, and wants to marry her, but Jane feels like the beautiful Blanche Ingram, is the one who Edward really wants! But Edward wants Jane and will do anything to have her as his wife!
But Edward is tormented by a hidden secret, that is soon found out, on Edward and Jane's wedding day! And Edward and Jane's life is changed forever!

Movie Review: Super Short, but One of My Faves
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Orson Welles as Mr. Rochester. His voice is perfect, along with an indescribable intensity, mixed with sarcasm and humor. They didn't follow the book very closely which allowed them to speed through the story. Nevertheless...I enjoyed this immensely. It's amazing how they can restore things. I saw a poor version of this on television years ago. This is pretty clear both sound and picture.

I find a small fault with this film, castingwise, but I wouldn't change it because I love Joan Fontaine - there's no way she could ever look plain, and Jane is supposed to be plain. As I said, I would never change it because I love her movies, but it is an oddity.

The lyrical narration by Joan Fontaine between scenes (transitions) helps to add a nice flow to the film. It was wonderful to see a very young Elizabeth Taylor in this, as Helen - she was beautiful and well-spoken even as a very young girl. This is very short and not much like the book, but it is still very good in my opinion.

Movie Review: Superior artistry and depth
Summary: 5 Stars

This film positively reeks of atmosphere, and a quite tangible sense of menace. It is a cruel, intolerant, and indifferent world. Your lot in life is cast at birth, and few there are brave enough to reach for more. The two leads in this film reach for more, from opposite directions, like cave-dwellers sensing the warmth of the sun for the first time. Orson Welles is extraordinarily powerful in this film, easily one of the most powerful performances I've ever seen. His depth of feeling is like a raging storm, yet never seems overdone,.... amazing! Joan Fontaine wears timidity like a suit of armor in an unforgiving world, the only world she knows. But underneath, and from an early age, she moves with integrity and courage. I thought she did a marvelous job. Beautiful quality filming, a moving story, and a powerful range of feelings absorbed by the viewer. If this film doesn't leave it's mark on you, I would have no idea how to respond to that..... I am indelibly marked.

Movie Review: I pick this version over the many
Summary: 5 Stars

Of the many versions of this story, I chose this one for several reasons. First of which is Joan Fontaine's performance. Mr. Welles is good enough, but the story and how it plays out is both masterful and gripping. This film allows you to immerse yourself into the story without regard to your current time of place. You identify with 'Jane Eyre' and care very much for her. With each character she somes in contact with, you are wondering if they will help or hurt her and you want to place them under your watchful eye. The video transfer quality is fine for the era and the audio was also good enough for most home theater systems with surround simulation capabilities. Perhaps one day this film will be re-released after careful restoration and transfer. I also found the audio commentary to be insightful and informative. This is a romantic classic in every sense and should be part of everyone's video library.

Movie Review: spectacular!
Summary: 5 Stars

Though this movie is an edited version of the book, it captures the very essence of what Charlotte Bronte wrote in her classic epic drama. The moodiness and Movie Noire Gothic feeling of the sets are captured to perfection. Orson Welles is a very convincing and plays Edward Rochester brilliantly. Joan Fontaine while some may say is too fine and pretty to play Jane, Captures her innocence, inner strength and devotion to Mr Rochester wonderfully. An added bonus are the children actors who play young Jane, Peggy Ann Garner, who also played in the Movie A Tree grows in Brooklyn and Helen, a very young and beautiful Elizabeth Taylor in her first featured role. In all, this is a must see film. I give it an A... I would have given it an A+ if they could have made it longer to fit the whole story in.
I really love this movie, I highly recomend you buy it!
