Movie Reviews of Jane Eyre

Movie Review: Bronte's masterpiece brought to vivid reality
Summary: 5 Stars

Looking for a great cinematic re-telling of Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece Jane Eyre? Look no further. This 1983 performance far surpasses other versions due to its dramatic richness. The casting is superb with Zelah Clarke as Jane and Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester. A more convincing Mr. Rochester there could never be as Timothy Dalton embodies the brooding, arrogant and yet curiously playful character with tremendous emotional sincerity. Zelah Clarke portrays the innocent and passionate heroine Jane Eyre with a moving sense of reality that is sure to move the audience to her sympathy. Both actors truly represent the characters as depicted in the original novel. This DVD gives you the full mini series which gives you the option to watch all together or skip to your favorite episode. Those who love the book will love this miniseries and those who've never read the book will, after viewing this series, soon after claim it as a favorite.

Movie Review: Can't Imagine A Better Adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

When considering which presentation of Jane Eyre to purchase, I read through numerous reviews of all available. This adaptation appeared to be the most praised, and I now know why.

Timothy Dalton - gorgeous and perfect as Mr. Rochester. Can't imagine any other actor in that part. I fell for him myself. I like that they included the gypsy scene as it shows he truly had affection for Jane to play such a practical joke on her, which would seem almost out of character for him.

The subtlety with which Zela Clarke played Jane showed the grace, softness and self-control that was at the heart of Jane. It was easy to see why someone who appeared as tough as Mr. Rochester would fall for her and want to protect her.

I have not seen any of the other versions of Jane Eyre, and quite honestly have no desire to. I'm completely satisfied with this one, and you will be too.

Movie Review: A Haunting,Haunted Romance
Summary: 5 Stars

"Jane Eyre" is the wonderful 1983 BBC adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's powerful novel. The movie brings the novel to passionate, sizzling life. Welsh actor Timothy Dalton is superb as the brooding, bitter Mr. Rochester who harbors a dark secret. Zelah Clarke, who doesn't look like the usual Hollywood beauty,is wonderful as the strong-willed,yet gentle Jane Eyre. Though hired on as a governess, she feels a great passion for her employer.

"Jane Eyre" has several plot twists that look quaint when one considers how classics have been updated. When Jane discovers that Edward Rochester is married, she leaves him. She doesn't see Mrs. Rochester's mental illness as an excuse for an affair. When the manor is burnt down, Jane returns to Edward's side and marries him.

"Jane Eyre" is a true cinematic classic,a pitch-perfect adaptation of the first gothic romance novel.

Movie Review: A Powerful Eyre
Summary: 5 Stars

Of the nine plus adaptations of Bronte's novel, this version holds closest to the book in both plot and dialogue. Fortunately, this 'Jane Eyre' was digitized and made available on DVD last year, a huge improvement for those of us who had to tolerate the old VHS version.

Timothy Dalton is a surprise. His portrayal of Rochester catches the character's pain and sense of humor, anger and care, frustration and playfulness. Zelah Clark's interpretation of Jane is weaker, perhaps because she is the one character required to mature more than any other. (While Dalton is my choice for 'best Rochester', Samantha Morton (A&E) remains my favorite 'Jane').

With a good supporting cast (including the Newfoundland playing 'Pilot') with particular kudos for the three Rivers characters, this is an adaptation I get more out of each time I see it. Well worth owning.

Movie Review: Thanks Pynteya
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend from Russia introduced this film to me by her desire to have a copy at any cost. She had seen this as a miniseries in Russia but missed a few episodes. I hurriedly read the book while waiting for her to let me borrow it. I have since read the book several times and seen several versions on film. This is the best. The story came alive in these actors. I even checked the book to see if some wonderfully illuminating scenes were added. They were not. They played them faithfully as if Charlotte Bronte had written the screenplay. Incidentally, the worst film version had William Hurt in it. The whole thing was butchered with the best scenes and dialog completely removed. I nearly walked out of the theatre. The elderly crowd could be heard muttering their shocked disapproval as we left.
This is the ONE. Nothing made before or since can touch it.
