Movie Reviews of Jane Eyre

Movie Review: The Absolute Best!
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, so many people seem to have the same opinion, there's not much else that I can say that will improve on what's been said. Suffice it to say that this is a wonderful as chocolate cake and as warm as a nice cup of cocoa. Wait for a good snow storm (rain will do) and curl up. Got a fire place? Light it. Get your chores out of the way, keep the snacks coming and sit back.

Cold and austere, no Hollywood, high-end production values; but oh, so much character and heartfelt acting, it gives one much the same feeling as the book. Dark and sullen is the mood throughout the series, but it will take you to a new level of what a solid production and series of excellent performances this is. If you want the glaring, money-infused productions of some more ambitious studio, try another version, but if you want to come close to what the the Author probably envisioned (and felt), this is your best bet. It's funny how special effects and big names don't always mean better. I'm thankful in this case. But be warned: It has the power to tear your heart out.

Movie Review: Probably the best adaptation yet
Summary: 5 Stars

I've long been a fan of The Bronte sisters and Jane Eyre was always my favorite book. Its not easy getting a full feel for the book in a movie, without losing important information. The first version that I remember seeing starred Orson Welles and was an old version. He did a fantastic job as Rochester but because of the time it was made, it didn't fully express the book. This version, with Timothy Dalton as Rochester is beyond words. He plays the role perfectly, showing the dark, broodiness of the character as well as the softer side that truly loves Jane. His situation is sad as he finds himself in love with his young governess while still married to a woman who isn't in her right mind. The actress that plays Jane, Zelah Clarke, also does an incredible, believable job. The book is most completely shown here, from Jane's childhood, to her education and then teaching responsibilities, to becoming the young woman that sees through the cold exterior of her employer. Truly a fabulous version and a must see for anyone that loves the classics as I do

Movie Review: Best Jane Eyre adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched every Jane Eyre adaptation and this is number one for me. T. Dalton is too handsome for the role. Let's face it women would buy movie and watch it over and over just to glance at him. Same scenes with less attractive actor wouldn't produce the same effect. He is not just a pretty face but tremendous acting ability and magnetism. I like everybody in this movie. It is very true to book. I like the dramatization. When at the end he asked her to leave, because he thought that she wanted to stay with him only out of pity, it is so hearbreaking. It is an opposite of the time when he begged her to stay. I also like scenes: Mr.Rochestor with Briggs asking his help in finding Jane and Jane with Briggs worrying about Rochester. I would remove lines where she called him "not handsome", since they choose a handsome actor.
I suprised that people called production outdated. According to the book, house should be in a bad shape, since Rochestor hardly leave there. I personally enjoy actors work not environment or special effect.

Movie Review: forgot the tissues
Summary: 5 Stars

I have just finished this version of the film and I am surprised to find that there is a version of Jane Eyre that I like more than the Orson Welles/Joan Fontaine version which up til now has been my favorite. I was skeptical at first about a former "James Bond" playing Mr. Rochester, however Timothy Dalton was amazing in this role. The parting scene between him and Jane after his secret had been revealed, left me crying for both of them. He looked and sounded like a man for who all hope was lost. Zelah Clark's portrayal of Jane is just what I had imagined from my numerous readings of Charlotte Bronte's wonderful work.
I will say that it was a little difficult at first to get past the almost soap opera look of the filmography, however the powerful acting by the cast soon overshadowed this. I have watched many versions of this story, and I want to see the latest version, however the Dalton/Clark and Welles/Fontaine verion will stand out as the best I have yet seen.

Movie Review: In anticipation of this unabridged DVD!

Finally!! I have been waiting 10+ years for this version to be released in its entirety. I bought the 2 vhs tape version 5 or so years ago and I was so disappointed! Let me tell you why.

Back in the 80's (I think) when I was in highschool, we didn't have cable television but my aunt in Tyler, Tx did. She meticulously recorded from A&E this whole series. They did not show it all in one sitting -- just maybe 30 minutes here sometimes just 15 minutes of a 5 or 6 hour production. Sometimes she didn't even know it was coming on, but she would pop a tape in if it did. Then she pieced it all together and gave us a copy of it.

We watched that I don't know how many times and loved it!! The gypsy scene is definitely wonderful and was not on the vhs version I had. So now finally they have put the whole production on this dvd!! Folks buy this one!! I just can hardly wait to see if there are some pieces my aunt missed!
