Movie Reviews of Jane EyreMovie Review: Timothy Dalton Gives an Unforgettable Performance Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this version of Jane Eyre when I was in college in the '80s. I'd never seen a repeat of it, but this Jane Eyre stayed in my heart until 2005 when I happened to see the DVD version. I bought it and have watched it over and over again since then.
I love this version's period setting--a grand castle, lush grounds and Victorian furnishings. Most of all, I love Timothy Dalton's portrayal of Rochester. Rochester is just as I imagined him to be from reading the book as a child--at times coarse, haunted, mysterious, engaging, commanding, assertive and desirable. (I will never know why Jane did not find him handsome; perhaps had she been less interested in the carpet, she could have seen the male beauty that was before her. Dalton is handsome, indeed, in a rugged sort of way.) This actor expertly delivered long, 18th-century dialogue in a believable way. His acting range is astonishing. From giggles to tears to female impersonation, Dalton's Rochester had me riveted and sympathizing with him, despite his "insolence."
I'm very happy with my purchase. No version of Jane Eyre equals this one as far as I'm concerned.
Movie Review: Handsome is as handsome does... Summary: 5 Stars
ROCHESTER (as portrayed by Timothy Dalton): "Do you think me handsome, Miss Eyre?"
JANE: "No, sir."
ROCHESTER: "Get out much, Miss Eyre?"
That said and aside, it's wonderful.
Dalton's depiction of Rochester's anguish and yearning amid his arrogance, makes his portrayal the best I've seen, and the many hours of the screenplay allow us to revel in a full depiction and transcription of our most beloved of Bronte's set-pieces: from their meeting, to the first interview, to the interviews that followed, to the chat at dawn after Mason was sent packing, to the proposal and the crisis of desire and conscience that befell the aborted wedding.
Zelah Clark has the look and the attitude of Jane. So much so, that the chemistry between the actors seemed to recast the class differences between the characters: I believed in the matinee idol Dalton's passion for the obscure actress, Clarke.
She even made Jane's redemptive year in Moor House, not quite the penance it usually is for the rest of us. Making her reunion with Rochester all the more poignant.
Movie Review: Dalton is genius as Rochester Summary: 5 Stars
If I remember correctly we were made to watch the BBC adaption in 10th grade and I was dreading it but once Dalton stepped onto the scene or should I say galloped onto the screen I was totally lost. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one mesmerized by Dalton's performance in this adaption. For me, this is the ONLY adaption I have enjoyed because Dalton just ruins it for every other actor. After watching the mini-series I bought the book and read it straight through without sleeping. I just love the book and love this version. Yes, it's a bit funny to hear Dalton's Rochester referred to as unattractive but given the magnitude of the performance I can overlook that. The man is stunning in this film and that doesn't hurt but it's the way he delivers his lines that amaze me. I was hanging on every word. This is my favorite book and film of all time. I was highly disappointed... like beyond consolable that the new DVD features a whole hour more than the BBC production yet not ONE new scene of Dalton. That's a tragedy. I'd have died and gone to Heaven if there were some lost scenes of him on the DVD. Ah well.
Movie Review: Jane Eyre 1983, THE BEST OF THE BEST Summary: 5 Stars
I've loved this book forever and even named my daughter Jane! This 1983 version with Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clark was faithful to the book in every way. The music between installments is haunting and lasting to this day! I guess it must be Timothy Dalton's perfect diction and his command of the script that intrigued me, and Zelah Clark's emotions were perfectly portrayed. Their chemistry and timing are great. I suffered with Jane at all the twists and turns of this story.
All the other versions pale by comparison, with perhaps the exception of the Orson Wells-Joan Fontaine version which I collected from The Movie Channel. Orson Wells was too dark and Miss Fontaine did the best she could opposite his genius. The movie was very short for that time and still conveyed the unfortunate tragedy of the circumstances.
The British are faithful to the story. Thornfield Hall was properly overwhelming and gloomy but the dialogue between Jane and Rochester is incomparable. I cherish each and every scene they have together. This is the grist from which love stories are made.
Movie Review: THE HANDSOME LAND LORD, AND JANE THE GOVERNESS! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first Jane Eyre movie that I ever saw, several years ago, and after watching this one, I became a true Jane Eyre fan!
I just loved this Mr. Edward R., He is your classic, rugged ,tall, dark and handsome leading man, with compelling, pretty eyes! I loved the heartfelt, profound tender way, that Edward was with Jane, he was so tall, and Jane was so short, and petite and yet Edward and Jane looked like they belonged together! I just loved this movie, and I highly recommend it!
I loved the way Jane with her quiet ways, and soulful eyes, touched Edward's broken heart. Jane tried to hide her feelings for Edward, and poor Edward, could not hold back his feelings for Jane, he loved her so!
I also so loved, the pretty decorated, beautiful rooms of Thornfield. This is a touching, heartfelt, and wonderful love story! After going thru their hidden sorrows, and profound sadness, and lost of hope, Jane and Edward finally found, well deserved happiness together! This is a all-time, classic love story, that has pain, and heartbreak, and love, and joy!
