Movie Reviews of Jane EyreMovie Review: The best version of "Jane Eyre" yet made! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been in love with this Jane Eyre "miniseries" for years. Glad to see it on DVD now. Timothy Dalton is the perfect Rochester--he literally channels the character. Sure he gorgeous and in the book Rochester is not as handsome, but he is all Rochester in every other way. Zelah Clarke makes a great Jane.
I have seen several other versions of "Jane Eyre", and most have something special to offer. The George C. Scott portrayal of Rochester was spot on, but Susanna York was way too beautiful and mature to play the young Jane.(Jane was not played by George's real life wife, Trish Van Devere, as one of the reviewers mentioned.) And it was much too short and edited down. The main music theme was haunting and beautiful. (Would like to find the soundtrack of it, if it exists.) The William Hurt version was forgettable. Both leads were miscast. The Ciaran Hinds film was ok, but I still didn't really get him as Edward. I can't even remember the actress who played Jane. And I vaguely remember an Orson Welles version. As I recall, he seemed to be a fairly good Rochester, but that movie version was not otherwise memorable.
So, what I am saying here is that if you want to really know the Jane Eyre story, this is the one to get. It is nearly perfect.
Movie Review: A Classic Beyond Words Summary: 5 Stars
What more can be said about this exquisite 1983 adaptation of "Jane Eyre". Having worn out my VHS tape, I'm profoundly greatful to now have the beautiful DVD which will wear out soon, as well, for viewing it so frequently! I am in awe of Timothy Dalton's portrayal of Rochester - his diction, his command of the written word, his inflection, his chemistry with Ms. Clarke, his brooding yet loving commitment to the character, his masculinity and his handsomeness. The entire production was magical - the setting, the actors and the trueness to Ms. Bronte's masterpiece. Mr. Dalton was and remains one of my favorite actors. I only wish we see more of him here in the U.S. including stage, movies and television. I give this lasting treasure 5 stars+. It is a treat for every age group and will remain, in my experience, the most beautiful production of such a unequivocal "masterpiece". I recently purchased the 2006 version with Toby Stevens and Ruth Wilson - it was well done and was lighter and brighter and wonderfully updated as to sensual scenes. Both were a release from today's world and takes one back to a simpler time filled with dignity, reserve, ettiquete and true love. Enjoy your viewing.
Movie Review: The Best Mr. Rochester and Jane, and Faithful to the Book! Summary: 5 Stars
I decided to borrow four screen versions of "Jane Eyre" from the library to find my favorite. I watched a 1996, a 1997, a 2006, and this one. Timothy Dalton transforms from a haughty, bitter Rochester to one who has fallen in love with the plain, but dimpled Jane. He portrays the constant struggle going on within Rochester, and yet conveys the boyish love he is feeling for his "little Janet". Yes, Mr. Dalton is too attractive for Mr. Rochester, but plays him wonderfully. Zelah Clarke annoyed me the first time I watched it because she seemed to pause so long before speaking her lines. Perhaps this was the director's fault. Anyhow, she still gives a life to Jane that makes her real to me, although she is not as young as Jane should be. Several lines are directly from the book. I admit I don't watch the episodes with Jane as a child repeatedly as I do her adult years. Remember this version is at least 5 hours long, so you have to be a true Charlotte Bronte/Jane Austen type fan to love it as I do. It definitely brings the most life to the book if you are teaching "Jane Eyre", even if you only show some of the episodes and not all. The other members of the cast are equally outstanding.
Movie Review: Absolutely the Best !! Summary: 5 Stars
I found this movie to be the best Jane Eyre I've seen. It was close to the book and enjoyable to watch at the same time. Zelah Clarke made a good Jane. She looked too old to be eighteen but she was so short that when she stood next to Rochester she looked young enough to be his daughter. To me Timothy Dalton was a perfect Rochester. He met most of the qualifications, besides being handsome and green eyed. But if you think about it, he might not have been considered handsome in mid-victorian England. So he might have been dead on! He was gruff but you could see he was " pervious, through a chink or two still". Another plus, they finally had a BLACK HAIRED BLANCHE! Most versions I've watched or have seen reliable clips of, have a blonde, which annoys me cosiderably. Also, they had a black and white Pilot. It wasn't a newfoundland but black and white none the less. I was also happy with the gypsy scene, which many versions change considerably or leave out altogether. It also handled her time with the Rivers well and acurately.
Many Jane Eyre enthusiast might disagree with me, but I think this movie is the absolute best. Definately money well spent!
Movie Review: Faithful to the Book! Summary: 5 Stars
This will be a short review since others have written far better and more eloquent reviews than I would be able to do--I just wanted to add my voice to the concensus. While I was watching this mini-series I was utterly shocked by its faithfullness to the book. That hasn't been my experience at all--most wonderful books are turned into mediocre to awful movies. But with this one--if I wanted to pick the book up and read along with the movie I could do it quite easily, so faithful is this representation of the book.
My only objection, and it really isn't even an objection, is that I wish it could have been just a LITTLE bit longer because some scenes near the end with Mary, Diana, and St. John seem rushed--but you can't have everything. Zelah Clarke is perfect as Jane and Timothy Dalton has said in the past that he believes that his portrayal of Mr. Rochester in this film is the finest acting he's ever done in his career and I have to say that I agree. He makes a very good Mr. Rochester.
Don't waste your money on other versions of Jane Eyre the way I have--just get this one. None of the others come close to comparing with it.
