Movie Reviews of Jane EyreMovie Review: Eyre fans REJOICE! Summary: 5 Stars
Goodness! My copy was just here for a week and my DVD player can't bear to part with it.
Yes, Zerah Clarke is a little too old. But she's really a very good Jane who can really shoot out a good reply to Rochester's remarks. They are both very witty in their conversations. Beside Timothy Dalton, she's very small. In some scenes, she looks very childlike beside him so for me that makes up for the age factor. When one sees her, I think she is the perfect picture of what the Victorians call "the angel of the house."
Yes, one might not agree with Timothy Dalton when he said: "I know that you are no more pretty than I am handsome", but in terms of his acting, I think no one could equal him as Rochester. He extracts the reaction one experiences with Rochester in the book. One minute you hate him and then the next you fall in love with him all over again. He makes one understand why Jane really fell in love with a guy like Rochester. I became a little afraid of him bec. he talked "like a sphinx."
There is no breathtaking orchestra, no picturesque cinematographies but it all comes out very well. My favorite scenes are all there: Rochester begging Jane ("Jane, my hope--my love--my life!"), the gypsy scene, excellent Jane-Rochester teasings with very good chemistry, and some portions at Whitcross and Moor House. Sometimes though, the dialogue is too long. They could have trimmed it a bit.
Overall, I think this is the BEST Jane Eyre adaptation that a literary purist such as I could ever wish for.
Movie Review: Loved this movie! Summary: 5 Stars
Perhaps I am the only person alive who saw this movie before they read the book. But, that put me in the unique position of being able to critique it on the basis of the performances of the actors. Having not read the book, when I first viewed it, I thought it odd when Rochester asked Jane if she thought him attractive and she answered with an emphatic "No". The guy is gorgeous, but I figured she just had different taste than me. Naturally, I realized Rochester was supposed to be unattractive after I read the book. However, to me, this is a minor point in comparison to the actors ability to convince me they are plain Jane and tortured Rochester.
I bought the movie because I remember vaguely hearing that "Jane Eyre" was a good story. One day I was strolling through the movie section and saw the cover and bought the movie on a whim. I sat through the whole thing one stormy Saturday afternoon and fell in love with the story. Poor little Jane immediately got my sympathy as the unloved orphan and kept it ever after. Although the ghost story was totally unexpected, and probably wouldn't work in a story of its kind today, it was totally appropriate here.
Now that I have actually read the book, and seen several other movie versions of the story, I still love this version the best. I like all the others as well, simply because they are "Jane Eyre", but this is my favorite.
Movie Review: Brilliant acting, The most accurate that will satisfy any fan Summary: 5 Stars
I have seen most of the films of Jane Eyre. It used to be that my favorite was the 1944 Orson Wells version. It doesn't follow the book exactly, but Orson was the perfect Mr Rochester in appearance and Joan Fontaine, while may be too pretty, came off with the innocence and ethereal quality of Jane, plus the gothic moodiness of the film was captured perfectly.
Now having seen the Timothy Dalton/Zelah Clarke version, this has become my new favorite. To me out of all the many versions. this follows the story the closest. Many may say Timothy Dalton was too good looking to play Mr Rochester, but I say his acting out shines any of the many actors who have played Rochester. He is simply brilliant. Timothy understands who Rochester is. He proceses it, takes his time with the part and thus all shines through.....his sensitivity and feeling has captured Mr Rochesters personalty of an angry, tortured, yet tender and loving and mischevious side to a tee.
The other actors are just as wonderful. Zelah Clarke has true heart and feeling, totally understands who Jane is and in essence is her in the movie. She and Timothy have a wonderful chemistry together, you can really feel the sexual tension between them, the jelousy, the pain and the true love they feel for each other.
The mini series really takes you in. One is captured and you never want to let go.
I highly recommend it A+
Movie Review: Wonderful! Marvelous! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my all time favorite version of Jane Eyre. I have seen all the rest, but this is by far the BEST!! I'll tell you why this is sooo good. It truly follows the book. Probably the only one out there that does such a good job of it. Every character, even the more complex plots of unknown family members (all three siblings are included in this version) every line (practically)is in this version. You really feel Jane's anguish as a child in a confusing adult world. You are saddened when her only friend at Lowood School dies. You see her frustration with certain teachers who only want to suppress her curious nature. you finally feel relief when she grows up to become a teacher herself at Lowood. Then you see her growing affection for Thornfield hall and all that encompasses it. You feel how she feels when she is made to feel inferior to Blanche, and your heartstrings are tugged at when she thinks Mr. Rochester is sending her away to Scotland, far from him. A very touching and intensely romantic scene. There are hundreds of reasons like this that make this version superior to the others. Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy this on DVD! I also have the video cassette version and have waited patiently for this incredible movie to be transferred to DVD. The wait is over, sit back with a pot of tea and enjoy yourself!
Movie Review: A near perfect version of Jane Eyre Summary: 5 Stars
Jane Eyre is my favorite book, and although I have seen every version of Jane Eyre that I know of, this is the only version that I own. I believe I have seen my favorite scenes nearing thirty times, and the entire movie start to finish five or six. Recently I have been watching it while I walk on the treadmill. I never tire of it. It is wonderful. There is nothing that comes close to this version. The first time I saw it I fought back disappointment that Zelah Clarke was not prettier, but I have long since thought her performance deep and layered. Every viewing yields a new revelation. Ms. Clarke has the perfect voice for Jane, and her face is very expressive with minimal movement. She is an interesting and empathetic Jane, and a perfect fit to Timothy Dalton's Rochester. Yes, Timothy Dalton is much too handsome to play Rochester, but he is a pleasure to watch because of it, and beyond perfect in his interpretation of Mr. Rochester. He thoroughly understands Rochester. He owns this role. Period. The whole cast is wonderful, with the exception of the young Jane Eyre, who, I must admit, has always irritated me, and has not managed to "grow on me" in my mutiple viewings. But that is a minor flaw on an otherwise brilliant production. I highly, highly recommend this movie.
