Movie Reviews of Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)Movie Review: This is what I was waiting for Summary: 5 StarsI have watched many versions of Jane Eyre recently and somehow hadn't heard about this one til just a few weeks ago. I saw a few clips on youtube and decided I really liked what I had seen, so I bought it. I was SO happy with this movie. While other versions may not take enough liberties with the book (as Toby Stephens said, some of Rochester's melodrama does not translate well to film) and some may take too many, I found this movie did everything right.
Ruth Wilson is the Jane Eyre I've been waiting for and Toby Stephens is the Rochester I've always dreamed of. I don't know how BBC managed to hit the nail on the head so hard. The movie is so eerie and beautiful that it left a strong impression on me, and thought its several hours long I happily watched it over and over.
On the cover it says "Just the right amount of heaving bodices"-- and I could not agree more. I have read many people say this version keeps with the spirit of the novel with the few liberties it takes, and having more physical interactions between Rochester and Jane are one of those liberties. It works so well, leaves nothing to be desired.
Other good things: Pilot is a haunting dog, Ms Fairfax, Blanche Ingram, Mrs. Ingram are all very well casted, the twin metaphor was beautiful, the gypsy scene made much more sense (another one of those 'works in book but not necissarily on film' liberties), and of course Toby Stephens is the most perfect Rochester I could ever dream up (so wonderful he possibly has taken the place in my heart of Colin Firth's Darcy...and I swore to lock my heart up for him forever!)
The only issue I had: The little girl playing Adele was not a very good actress, and I couldn't even tell if she was actually French
Movie Review: Loved this version of Jane Eyre. Summary: 5 StarsAfter seeing countless versions of Jane Eyre, this is my favorite. The actors playing Rochester and Jane are great and they bring passion to their roles.
Movie Review: Simply Great Summary: 5 StarsAfter further deliberation, I decided to write a review after all, even 2 years after the movie came out. Despite certain things, the movie over all was awesome. Can you believe that I watched it every night for 7 nights in a row? It is insane, but so is the movie.
Let me start off saying that this is by far the best Mr. Rochester I have seen. Toby Stephens does a terrific job portraying Rochester. Yes, he is not as tyrannical as in the book, but his expressions, his speech, the way he moved was simply wow. It was refreshing to see Mr. Rochester humorously sparring with Jane, it was refreshing to see the wit in him, the vulnerability, the shadows that just haunt him all the time, and it is just as refreshing seeing his face lighten up upon him seeing Jane.
While in the book, Mr Rochester acted like a spoiled brat of a baby, in the movie Mr Rochester is an enigmatic, strong, morose and cynical person who still showed vulnerability, and thus seemed human.
Jane was good as well, she did not need to speak, her eyes said it all. I liked her shyness, and her spark and spunk, I liked her humorous flirtations, as well as her unhappiness and despair. I cant say much about her because the true acting belonged to Toby.
But what an enigmatic pair they are.
People are complaining about the heated passionate scene in her bedchamber, about too much kissing and probably (in my opinion) fondling. But look, no matter what period Bronte wrote this book, people were still people back then, full of sexual passions, tensions, and sexual love. It was very nice indeed to see the scene after Jane saves Rochester from fire, it was very pleasant and erotic no less to see the scene of him laying on top of her, and kissing. Common now, sex is sex in every century, in every culture, and in every society.
My only complaint is that the camera work could have been better; other than that technicality, great job!
PS NOW I have a crush on Mr Rochester and Toby:)
Movie Review: I love it! Summary: 4 StarsThis is an excellent rendition of Jane Eyre. The fact that it is four hours long allows for lots of detail and character development. It shows flashbacks of Rochester's past, which I don't remember seeing in other versions, and has the right amount of mystery and spookiness. I bought this movie for a gift, but I will definitely add it to my own collection.
Movie Review: Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theater) Summary: 5 StarsThis adaptation of Jane Eyre was the best I have viewed. It was preferable to the most accurate version (BBC) as it was a continuous viewing; not broken by chapter viewing. The characters were quite good in their representation of each character portrayed. Would recomend this vidio over any of the others I have seen performed as the most enjoyable. ML
