Movie Reviews of Jane Eyre (BBC)Movie Review: Best Rochester portrayal Summary: 5 Stars
After seeing a notable number of Jane Eyre adaptations, I have just found that the '73 adaptation is the best among all: it has the advantage of a good length which allows the perfect character development, it has a fire-spirited Jane and a bewitching Rochester (both very true to the book's characters), it has a sparkling interaction between the main two characters, and its script has some well-chosen small deviations from the book, which only make the story more credible (e.g., see the gypsy scene).
I personally found it much better than the '83 miniseries.
Simply put: a gem, a real gem!
Movie Review: Long-time favorite Summary: 5 Stars
I'm so glad to see this available on DVD as my well-worn VHS tape needs replacing! Other than Sorcha Cusack appearing a bit older than the Jane of the book, the casting offers character portrayals that fit the feeling of the book more than other versions I have seen. No milktoast Mr. Rochester and no wimpy little girl Jane as in other offerings (often other versions have one character that fits while the other doesn't). The length gives time to develop the characters and plot. Overall, this is my favorite Jane Eyre!
Movie Review: Exceptional adaptation Summary: 5 Stars
For true Jane Eyre fans this is the one and only adaptation to watch. The acting is wonderful, Michael Jayston and Sorcha Cusack ARE Rochester and Jane, and there is fantastic chemistry between them. This really captures the atmosphere of the novel, and there is also wonderful humour in many of the scenes which is missing from most of the other adaptations. It is far, far superior to the 1983 version with Tim Dalton, which is frankly, very disappointing. The 1973 version is a real classic, don't miss it!
Movie Review: Fabulous Summary: 5 Stars
This is the one to watch for all true Jane Eyre fans. Some amazing acting from Michael Jayston and Sorcha Cusack, and a great supporting cast. Lovely touches of humour and great chemistry between the 2 main stars. It's a gem of an adaptation. Much better than the 1983 version with Tim Dalton and Zelah Clark which is very disappointing and I wouldn't recommend. Make sure you see the 1973 version. it's a classic!
Movie Review: Nice Summary: 5 Stars
Very good rendition, but the ending is very disappointing. Oh well, have about 4 different versions and my other favorite is the one with Timothy Dalton. A shame that you can't have one that captures the book as entirely as it should.
