Movie Reviews of Jane Eyre (BBC)

Movie Review: THE BEST JANE EYRE EVER
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best adaptation of Jane Eyre, bar none. It perfectly captures the novel, and is mercifully free of bizarre modern additions to the dialogue (since Bronte's writing is already sublime!). Sorcha Cusack is ideal for Jane: she is just as small and "elfin" as the novel describes her, and deftly portrays Jane's struggle between propriety and passion. But Michael Jayston is in a class by himself - his performance of Rochester should have won an Oscar. He plays this difficult character absolutely perfectly: capricious, eager, domineering, and charismatic. This adaptation is a must for every Jane Eyre fan, and having kept my ancient VHS copy like a gold nugget for years and years, I am SO ecstatic to see that it's finally out on dvd. Highly, highly recommended!

Movie Review: By far the best J. Eyre adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

After watching pretty much all of the versions of Jane Eyre (one of my favorite books, ever), I can not urge you enought to forsake all other, lesser adaptations, and get this one. It is most faithfull rendition of the book, and captures the moody , melancholy feeling of the book perfectly. Actors are so perfectly cast, particularly Michael Jayston, who is an ideal Rochester. He does a fantastic job of having his character grow on you, and by the end of the series, you are as much in love with him as Jane. This is '70s adaptation, but production didn't bother me all that much. I watched this version just after the latest BBC/Masterpiece Theatre 'Jane Austen', and while I like that one just fine, Cusack/Jauston interpretation is just so much more fun.

Movie Review: Excellent Adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

I have seen the better adaptations of this story (i.e., Timothy Dalton/Zelah Clarke, Welles/Fontaine), but this Cusack/Jayston version is the best because of the superb casting, acting, and faithfulness to the novel. I concur absolutely with another reader who says Cusack is a better Jane Eyre than the excellent Zelah Clarke; both Clarke and Timothy Dalton are too stiff; they give stage, rather than screen, performances. Also, Timothy Dalton (as one of the world's best looking men) cannot be credited as Bronte's Vulcan-like Edward Rochester. (As a bit of trivia, the actress who plays the cruel Mrs. Reed in the Cusack/Jayston version later plays Mrs. Fairfax in the Clarke/Dalton version.)

Highly recommended.

Movie Review: EXCEPTIONAL ADAPTATION
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay...Everybody knows the story so no purpose reiterating it. As far as this adaptation goes...very simple...you take two extremely talented actors (Michael Jayston and Sorcha Cusack) and a fine script (very close to the book) and it = A classic first rate mini-series. This mini-series was far superior to the 1983 version. In the 1983 version (didn't like it), the actress who played Jane was horrible...underplayed the part...and no chemistry between the lead actors. In this version, there was character development and chemistry between Jane and Rochester. Compared to the book, there were some updated changes made in the script which were refreshing and appropriate. This is a "must have" DVD for Jane Eyre fans.

Movie Review: Terrific Version
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved every minute of this. It is the closest adaptation to the book I have seen of five I have watched over the years. The acting is superb and the costuming and settings aren't bad either. For stories like this, the longer the better in my opinion, to really capture the essence and nuances of the original masterpiece. That's why it's so great to be able to collect DVDs like this so they can be watched in parts due to length. I think one of the best parts of this is the relationship built so deeply between the characters as the longer story progresses. They can't really do that in a 2 hour movie.
