Movie Reviews of Jane Eyre (BBC)

Movie Review: Wish I could give it 10 stars. One of the best book adaptations ever put on film
Summary: 5 Stars

It took over 20 years for this adaptation to be released for home viewing and what a gift to the viewing public it is. I first saw this version on PBS in the early 1980s. (I actually bought my very first VHS machine so I could record it!) One of my recorded tapes became corrupted over the years and I've been searching high and low for a viewable copy of this made-for-TV masterpiece for at least a decade. To finally have it available is, for me, a dream come true.

What makes this version so superior to the many versions of this story that have been produced before and since? Two things: the script, which is scrupulously true to the novel in every detail and which uses Bronte's beautiful dialogue straight from the book, and the inspired, magical performances of Sorcha Cusack as Jane and Michael Jayston as Rochester.

Yes, it's a clunky 1970s era, BBC production with sets and costumes that look a bit cheesy and the videotape filming medium is far from ideal, but these are minor quibbles. I've watched every version of Jane Eyre since the Orson Welles/Joan Fontaine movie from the 1940s and none of them come close to capturing the true meaning of the story like this one does.

If you love Jane Eyre you owe it to yourself to buy/rent/borrow this version and get ready for 4.5 hours of magic!

Movie Review: The Best "Jane Eyre" Is Here!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! -- do my eyes deceive me? -- I was sitting here doing a blank search for this "Jane Eyre" with Sorcha Cusack, which I had seen on PBS in 1972-73, mainly remembering its haunting Elgar theme, and what a tremendous surprise to see that Acorn has remastered this wonderful BBC series. This, in my opinion, is the definitive production. Sorcha Cusack is, without question, the actress who has captured the essence of the character of Jane. Spirited, with a touch of pathos and individuality, one is truly warmed to her relationship with the tortured Rochester, played by the marvelous Michael Jayston. The actors never allow the characters to be mere caricatures, with the obvious romance inherent, but invest in true depth and nuance to make the characters real and interesting. I had never thought this would be released and am just overwhelmed! I urge all who are looking for the best interpretation of this classic, to look no further and purchase this extraordinary BBC Acorn classic. Acorn has also produced "The Duchess of Duke Street" which is another wonderful offering, but that is another review. Suffice to state, for all "Jane Eyre" enthusiasts, the search stops here.

Movie Review: Very Enjoyable Adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

I am glad I was not discouraged by some of the negative reviews here from watching this version of Jane Eyre. I found it very enjoyable in nearly all respects. This version most resembles the Timothy Dalton film, in many cases word for word as they both stick closely to the dialogue in the novel. This version has a little more of the dialogue, however. It sticks very closely to the book, though there are a few variations. For example in this movie Jane guesses immediately who the "gypsy" really is, and therefore Rochester doesn't have a chance to use the ruse to try to get Jane to make a confession.

As for some of the criticisms, I didn't find the voice over narration to be intrusive but rather illustrated Jane's interior monologue. I also didn't find the characters to be cold to each other. Much of the humor of the novel comes through.

Highly recommended to anyone looking for a faithful adaptation of the novel.

Movie Review: Best overall adaptation of Bronte's novel
Summary: 5 Stars

After having had the opportunity to view several adaptations of Jane Eyre, Sorcha Cusack captures the heart, mind, and the look of Bronte's groundbreaking characterization of Jane. After the exquisitely masterful acting of Cusack in this role, it will take some adjustment on my part to see her in other roles. To put it as plainly as I can, Sorcha was Jane Eyre. The overall casting was very good; Michael Jayston's Rochester was very true to Charlotte's Bronte's vision of a deeply wounded misguided man searching for true meaning and fulfillment in a very Class conscious, frivolous society. It was refreshing to see Stephanie Beacham as a young woman who was the very female prototype of that priviledged, claustrophobic, and very clueless world that shunned people such as Jane. For literature purists, this Jane Eyre is a must-see!

Movie Review: Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
Summary: 5 Stars

Hallelujah, "Jane"'s on DVD. (Always felt I should keep my old VHS tape of it in a safe deposit box - since this production seemed to've dropped off the face of the earth...) Bronte's book is my all-time favorite novel, and for us purists, this 1973 mini-series is truly the best of all adaptations. Sorcha Cusack captures Jane's spirit admirably. Her chemistry with Michael Jayston is mindboggling.
Always been very particular about my Mr. Rochesters, and never much cared for other actors' interpretations. And, at first glance, Jayston too was disappointing - not as physically as big or as dark as I thought he should be. But by the end of the first episode he's in (Part 2), I was speechless. Completely transfixed by Parts 3 and 4, and at the conclusion was just barely alive. Don't miss this one.
