Movie Reviews of JabberwockyMovie Review: Similar to Holy Grail and Life of Brian Summary: 4 Stars
I found Jabberwocky to be very similar to Monty Python's Holy Grail and Life of Brian. In a lot of ways I liked it better. It doesn't have the main Monty Python troupe but it has the laughs. The sub-plots are absurd. The dialogue is incessantly outrageous. The sets, costumes, and make-up are brutally authentic. The dragon-monster featured in the last part of the film is both whimsical and silly. The humor is often dark and silly. There are plenty of joust fights, mis-haps, and zany one-liners throughout the movie. It isn't for young children. But it may appeal to anyone over 16 that has a dark sense of humor and appreciates movies with knights, dragons, non-stop silliness, and absurd sub-plots. Grade: A-
Movie Review: Beware the Jabberwocky, you could hurt yourself laughing! Summary: 4 Stars
This is NOT Monty Python and you will be very disappointed if you are looking for that type of humor. This is an understate humor that makes you think while you laugh at one point but falls into slapstick at another.
The principles are all excellent and this is one of their early efforts. Some will say "it shows" but this has always been a fun movie to watch. I saw it in the theater when it came out, bought it in VHS and now have it on DVD. The pace slows from time to time but a series of running gags and some great one-line jokes always picks things up.
This is a very good price for an excellent movie. Relax, turn off your mind and watch out!
Movie Review: Not a "PG" rated film Summary: 4 Stars
There is subtle male and explicit female nudity in this film. The PG rating is an anachronism of the time before there was a PG-13 rating. This film does not have extensive bad language, but there are some gruesome scenes depicting violence. That being said, the nudity would have to be shortened to receive a PG-13 rating today. I have no problem with these aspects, and would call it a good film overall!
Movie Review: Must For Diehard Python Fans Summary: 4 Stars
Okay, so it gets a tad tiresome. It's not quite the classic that, say Monty Python and the Holy Grail is. But it is wonderful, a wonderfully dark, gloomy comedy. See it with another Gilliam film sometime for a treat, and a peak inside the mind of a delightful madman without whom the world would be a poorer place.
Movie Review: LET'S GO WHIFFLING THROUGH THE TULGEY WOOD Summary: 3 Stars
Filmed two years after "Holy Grail, director Terry Gilliam's "JABBERWOCKY" (Columbia Tristar, $25) stars Python pal Michael Palin in a picaresque, sometimes madcap, medievalishly loose adaptation of Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem "Jabberwocky" (taken from "Through the Looking Glass," the sequel to "Alice in Wonderland.") "The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, came whiffling through the tulgey wood, and burbled as it came!"Carroll was a wordsmith of high weirdness and Gilliam is a uniquely gifted artist (and animator) with a singularly skewed vision. A perfect match, it would seem. Unfortunately, when this film was originally released, what Python fans expected was another full throttle farce like "Holy Grail." It is not. Officially, this is not even a Python film but rather an artistic exercise grim fairy tale imagery itself. Wonderfully stylized costumes and sets abound in rich detail and design. The story follows simpleton peasant Dennis Cooper (Palin) who, disowned by his late father, leaves his true love -- the obese, spiteful Griselda Fishfinger -- and heads for the big city that has, unbeknownst to him, been laid waste by the dreaded Jabberwock. There seems to be an homage by Gilliam to acknowledge original Carroll illustrator John Tenniel's line drawings, especially when the Jabberwock actually appears. And with whom Cooper does battle. "One, two! One, two! And through and through the vorpel blade went snicker snack! He left it dead and with its head went galumphing back." The widescreen disc features a fascinating and funny commentary with Gilliam and Palin as well as photos and sketch to screen comparisons. For specialized tastes and Gilliam fans.
