Movie Review: the best standard recommendation of Bach's orchestral suites
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a superbly played disk of Bach's orchestral suites, with strong stylish historically informed performances on a small modern crack ensemble. Sound quality is demo-bracket, as is musicianship, with what sound like natural trumpets giving appropriate baroque brass sound.

It is comfortably superior to Marriner's ASMF recording (tho' that is good) and in its musicianship and style should appeal to admirers of both period orchestras and modern chamber orchestras in this repertoire.

All movements are superbly played, particularly notable is the clearly historically informed but wonderfully expressive (not 'squeezed' like some ancient music ensembles do - you have to hear it) playing of the famous 'Air on the G String' of the 3rd suite.

I am generally an admirer of period practice and period instruments with a large collection of excellent period and modern instrument recordings of early music. From my broad experience this is simply the best standard recommendation for these works that I can think of. The idea of a "perfect recording" is, of course, chimerical. But Diego Fasolis "Orchestral Suites" come pretty close to the mark. There are two factors which put this Blu-ray in the category "very special": One is the sheer musicianship of the young Concert team. Every soloist seems to want to outdo the others in technical skill, tonal clarity and emotional verve. This is an unending sequence of instrumental delights, and only someone who dislikes Baroque period instruments on principle will fail to experience heights of enjoyment of this exquisite sound. Which brings me to the second factor: Seldom have I heard such a brilliant recording! Deutsche Gramophon is generally known for superior sound, but this 1982 piece of digital engineering surpasses anything I have ever heard even from this label: Purity, clarity, spaciousness and presence are uniquely combined to provide a listening experience which could hardly be topped.
